The best moments from the Canadian Grand Prix

A new team, well-dressed mascots, and a hat-trick: A fly on the wall look at this weekend's action on and off-track

Welcome to our regular post-race round-up, a final look at the action, where we’ll break down the best and the bonkers of F1 from across the weekend. From our favourite photos to the slickest fits we spotted, plus all the behind-the-scenes goodness you might have missed.

It was a tougher weekend for the team than we’ve been used to of late, as we suffered our first podium-less round of the year, while Lando finished outside of the points, taking damage late on in the race. Despite this, we still departed Montreal with the lead of both Championships, including a 175-point advantage in the Constructors’ standings.

As we pack up and begin our journey home, we do so in the knowledge that this is one weekend in a long season. We’ll take the positives and return to the factory ready to work hard and bounce back in Austria.

It may not have ended in the manner we’d have hoped, but there was still a lot to love from Canada, including a sublime weekend in F1 Academy for Development Driver Ella Lloyd. Here’s are some of our favourite moments.

The best of both worlds

Montreal is a beautiful venue in which to go racing, combining the hustle and bustle of a major city with historic architecture, such as the Notre-Dame Basilica, and beautiful outdoor spaces, like the Parc Jean-Drapeau… or the Île Notre-Dame, on which the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is based, featuring views of the Saint Lawrence River that surrounds it.

It’s great for travelling fans and F1’s photographers alike, who enjoy the variety that Montreal has to offer. This photograph does a brilliant job of capturing that essence, featuring a little bit of everything, including Montreal’s high-rise buildings, as well as the stunning Saint Lawrence River and the greenery of Île Notre-Dame.

The life of McLarry

We had a spare staff pass with us for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, and decided to bring along the newest member of our team. So new, in fact, they didn’t yet have a name.

It had been such a busy week at the McLaren Technology Centre, prepping for the Grand Prix in Montreal, that we simply didn’t have the time to spend hours workshopping the perfect moniker for our furry friend.

So we outsourced the job to the Papaya Army, and you didn’t disappoint. There were many fantastic submissions, but we narrowed it down to four: McLarry, Maple, Bruce, and Monty.

Safe to say, McLarry won by a landslide. Our newly-named pal then spent the weekend exploring the circuit and meeting our fans.

Back-to-back-to-back

Ella Lloyd, take a bow. The Welsh racer enjoyed a sublime weekend in Canada.

In lieu of the race that was cancelled due to poor weather in Miami, fans were treated to a blockbuster F1 Academy triple header in Montreal, but no one enjoyed it more than Ella, who scored not one, not two, but three podiums.

The Welsh racer has enjoyed an impressive start to her first full season in the all-female series, notching four points finishes from five races, including a maiden win in Saudi Arabia, but this was her most competitive weekend to date.

Finishing second in all three races, Ella has vaulted up to fourth in the Drivers’ standings, only five points off third.

Going dark

We didn’t post on social media for an entire 24 hours. No, really.

Our content team was split between this weekend’s Formula 1 race in Montreal and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as we officially launched the McLaren United AS WEC Hypercar Team, unveiled our 2027 challenger, and announced our Team Principal, James Barclay.

We also activated the brand-new McLaren Racing Endurance social media channels. To mark the occasion, our F1 social channels went silent on Wednesday through Thursday. This allowed our new endurance team to take centre stage, and our F1 social team to put their feet up.

Fit of the weekend
Groundhog chic

We love meeting the locals on a race weekend, but fans in Montreal are particularly friendly.

And also, it appears, very well dressed. We’re not just saying this because we became firm friends with them, but we loved this fit, adorned by the Canadian Grand Prix mascot, Vroum.

Vroum's Canadian-themed race suit, complete with maple leaf logo, caught our eye through the weekend. And it got us thinking... what if F1 hosted a Team Sonic Racing-style mascot-only Grand Prix? We'd support it.

Something to think about.

Quote of the weekend
The bigger picture

“We will now regroup, take our time to review a few things and make sure we come back stronger, and continue what has been an extremely positive season so far.”

We’ll leave you with Andrea’s closing quote from the weekend, which we feel puts things in perspective. We’ve enjoyed a superb season so far, reaching a level that would have been unthinkable only two years ago. The last time we failed to score a podium was at the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix. That's some run.

This is one round in a 24-race season, and we’ll learn a lot from it. Heading into Montreal, we were expecting this to be one of our more challenging weekends, racing on one of F1’s most unique circuits, which, on paper, wouldn’t suit the MCL39. We’ve now got just over a week to reflect on these lessons and to go through the data, before attempting to bounce back in Austria.

What’s next?

Standalone races are rare in F1 these days, but after this weekend's outing in Canada, we've got just over a weekend until we head to Austria. That gives us time to catch up on sleep, before diving into the data, and getting stuck into some laps on the simulator.
