    Our Formula 1 Heritage

Living through history

McLaren’s roots are spread across multiple racing series, but so many of our greatest stories and finest triumphs have come in Formula 1.

Having started off as a group of scrappy young Kiwis in 1966, we’ve become one of the sport’s oldest, most successful teams, with nine Constructors' Championships and 12 Drivers’ Championships. Within that time, we’ve risen and fallen, discovered new heroes, lost legends, won on the final lap and endured gut-wrenching late defeats, experiencing every emotion imaginable.

Our champions have all possessed the same insatiable desire to race and relentless work ethic as our founder, Bruce McLaren, but each has told their own unique, timeless tale… Emerson Fittipaldi ignited the passion of his native Brazil, James Hunt created as many headlines on the front pages as on the back, Niki Lauda and Alain Prost turned sport to science, and Ayrton Senna’s burning intensity took our team to new levels, before Mika Häkkinen and Lewis Hamilton picked up the baton, winning hearts with their fearless aggression.

And with every passing race, our team creates new history. There are so many more stories to tell.
