The best moments from the Hungarian Grand Prix

A landmark win, gifts from the grandstands, and a coincidence in the pit lane: A fly on the wall look at this weekend's action on and off-track

Welcome to our regular post-race round-up, a final look at the action, where we’ll break down the best and the bonkers of F1 from across the weekend. From our favourite photos to the slickest fits we spotted, plus all the behind-the-scenes goodness you might have missed.

In the final race before the summer break, Lando and Oscar continued our 1-2 streak, finishing first and second for the fourth race in a row, capping off a sensational first half of the year, as we head into the two-week break with a near 300-point lead over second place in the Constructors’ Championship.

There were plenty of reasons to smile, as Hungary delivered an exciting Grand Prix, in which we chalked up our 200th Grand Prix win in Formula 1. Here, we’ll look back over the weekend and highlight some of our favourite moments.

Moment of the weekend
Joining an exclusive club

What else could it be? Lando’s fifth win of the year was McLaren’s 200th overall, meaning we join an exclusive club, as only the second team to chalk up a double century of Grand Prix wins in Formula 1.

Twenty-two drivers have won for McLaren across 59 seasons in the sport, including some of the biggest names, from our founder Bruce McLaren himself to our seven World Champions, Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Häkkinen, and Lewis Hamilton

With Oscar finishing in second, it was also our fifth 1-2 of the season, and our fourth in a row – a feat we last achieved in 1988 with Prost and Senna.

200 and counting…

We achieved a landmark win in Hungary, but we aren’t stopping there. That was the message coming out of Budapest, as the team celebrated the remarkable milestone, while increasing our advantage at the top of the Constructors’ Championship.

We couldn’t have done it without the incredible men and women in this photograph, not to mention the many hundreds more back at base, who work tirelessly day in day out and do their bit to deliver a car with the potential to fight for the World Championship.

As we head into the summer break, they’ll be enjoying some well-earned rest, recouping and recovering ready to go again in the second half of the season, as we approach crunch time in the Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Championships.

Gifts from the grandstands

We got in and amongst it with the Papaya Army this weekend, in the fan stage and in the fan zone, where we got chatting to you, signed your favourite merch, and even gifted some paddock club tickets.

And you returned the kindness with some surprises of your own. In addition to creating a mini-McLaren car out of a Monster Energy can, you painted and gifted to us this incredible portrait of Lando.

Capping off the weekend

At one stage, with Oscar in second and Lando back in fifth, following the start of the race, it looked like these caps might not make it out of our suitcases until after the summer break...

Lando's victory allowed us to showcase this simple but stylish design from New Era, who cooked up a cap for the ages in celebration of our 200th win. These were distributed to and donned by every member of the team, including Lando and Oscar, as we captured our team photograph.

So good, we did it twice

In the Hungarian Grand Prix we set two identical, season-best pit stop times, with the team recording a 1.94s stop for Lando on Lap 32, before repeating the trick with another 1.94s stop for Oscar on Lap 46. After 14 rounds, following our season-best effort in Hungary, we’re second in DHL’s Fastest Pit Stop Awards.

Quote of the weekend
Tough but rewarding

“I’m really pleased to win the 200th Grand Prix for McLaren. It means a lot to me”

Having now achieved McLaren’s 200th Grand Prix win, in addition to his successes at Monaco and Silverstone earlier this year, Lando has made a habit of winning in big moments for McLaren.

Speaking after the race, he revealed that he was losing his voice, such was the intensity of the action. It was a tiring 70 laps, which required the Briton to push flat out for large periods while persevering with his tyres. He added in his post-race interview “I'm dead. I'm dead. It was tough.”

He had opted for a one-stop strategy in an attempt to get back into the race, after initially falling from third to fifth when the lights went out. After getting back ahead of Fernando Alonso and into fourth, he then remained out when others pitted for the second time, assuming the lead of the race. Once unleashed in clean air, Lando extended his lead and went on to defend it gallently, along with his tyres, when those around him returned from the pits and began eating into his lead.

What’s next?

It's time for a holiday! F1 is now entering its mandatory summer shutdown period, where our team will enjoy a well earned two-week break, before returning, full of energy, at the end of August for the Dutch Grand Prix.
