The best moments from the Belgian Grand Prix

Family fun, sightless sim racing, and Lando’s lookalike: A fly on the wall look at this weekend's action on and off-track

Welcome to our regular post-race round-up, a final look at the action, where we’ll break down the best and the bonkers of F1 from across the weekend. From our favourite photos to the slickest fits we spotted, plus all the behind-the-scenes goodness you might have missed.

Another weekend, another result for the history books. Oscar and Lando’s 1-2 in Belgium was our third in a row and our sixth of the season – our highest tally since Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost in 1988.

At one stage, as heavy rain fell over rural Spa-Francorchamps and the drivers sat twiddling their thumbs in the garage, the Belgian Grand Prix seemed in doubt, but once they’d gotten underway, Oscar and Lando’s 1-2 never did.

There was plenty of action throughout the weekend on and off track – here’s our round-up of the bits we enjoyed best.

Outfit of the weekend
Lando, is that you?

Known for his sharp fashion sense, Lando is a regular in this section of our post-race round-up, but in this weekend's edition, all isn't as it seems.

At this weekend’s fan forum on Friday in Belgium, we spotted Lando in the crowd, suited up and ready to go racing… Only to realise, he was right with us on stage. How could he be in two places at once, we asked?!

It took us a while to figure it out, but obviously, he wasn’t. No, it turns out, this McLaren fan had wonderfully recreated Lando's race day look, wearing a driver suit and a realistic-looking replica of LN4’s famous helmet design.

Life's inevitabilities

Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, during a marketing day at the McLaren Technology Centre, Oscar flexed his impressive knowledge of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps by correctly guessing each corner of the track based on sound alone…

So, surely, driving the track blindfolded, guided by Lando’s expert instructions, would be a walk in the park? As it turned out… not quite, given the pair were somewhat distracted by the inevitable laughter this scenario caused.

Quote of the weekend
Healthy competition

"We’re pushing each other a lot. It’s a good but tough battle that we have at the minute."

Lando and Oscar have been the class of the field this season, trading Grand Prix victories and the lead of the Drivers’ Championship between them. Going into the Spa, Oscar’s advantage had been cut down to just eight points, with Lando having won the previous two races in Austria and Great Britain, fighting back after Oscar had won three in a row between Bahrain and Miami.

Speaking after Lando had taken Pole, Oscar summed up the healthy rivalry they’ve enjoyed so far this year, explaining how they’ve been pushing one another to be better: "We’re pushing each other a lot. It’s a good but tough battle that we have at the minute.”

Oscar went on to nab first from his teammate on the opening lap, with an audacious, slipstream-enthused move ahead of Les Combes on a wet track. From there, the Australian managed to maintain a large enough gap between them to clinch victory. The two shared a moment in parc ferme afterwards, recognising their good racing and congratulating each other on another job well done.

Home heroics

Three weeks after watching Lando win his home Grand Prix at Silverstone, Lando’s mother was in Spa to see him finish on the podium for the first time at her home Grand Prix. Lando’s mother is from the Flanders region in Belgium and was at the race this weekend to support her son, who finished second.

Beaming with pride, she was captured by the Sky Sports F1 cameras on numerous occasions throughout the weekend, including this sweet moment. She was later spotted sporting a cap that Lando had signed, “moeke”, an affectionate word for mother in Flemish.

Lucky charms

Lando wasn’t the only McLaren driver with Family at the Belgian Grand Prix. During an interview with British television broadcaster Channel 4, Oscar revealed that his mum, dad, aunty, and grandad were all in Belgium this weekend, where they watched him triumph for the sixth time this season – the most by an Australian during a single Formula 1 season. It was Oscar’s grandad’s first-time watching him race in F1 outside of Australia, and his sister’s third.

Following his victory, Oscar signed his winner’s champagne bottle: “To Grandad. I guess you need to come to races more often too!”, having written a similar message to his sister when she was in Barcelona to see him win the Spanish Grand Prix.

Jacky of all trades

Jacky Ixck stole the show at his home race as the drivers crossed the finish line in the Grand Prix, the Belgian producing a Chequered Flag wave for the ages.

Normally, all eyes are locked onto the action on track, but the Brussels-born racing legend, who competed in a one-off race for McLaren in the 1973 German Grand Prix, caught our attention with his ice-cool pose as Oscar won the race, resulting in this cold photograph.

What’s next?

We're straight back at it this weekend in Budapest as we return to Hungary for the first time since Oscar's maiden F1 win at the circuit last year. Lando and Oscar will be battling for what would be our 200th Grand Prix victory, as we look to extend our lead in the Constructors' Championship ahead of the summer break.
