Why Andrea joined Zak, Lando and Oscar in extending his contract
“It is important that as a team and individually, we keep growing and keep building”
Stability has been a critical factor in our remarkable turnaround of form and that’s why Team Principal Andrea Stella saw it important that he joined Zak Brown, Lando and Oscar in committing his future to McLaren.
Zak, Andrea, Lando, and Oscar have been central figures in our return to the front of the grid and will continue to play a pivotal role in a journey that’s only just getting started. With all four now confirmed for the long-term, Andrea believes this “continuity” will provide our team with the confidence to take another step forward.
“When you are in a competition like Formula 1 that is so tight and so demanding, it is important that as a team and individually, we keep growing and keep building,” Andrea says. “In order to be able to do so, continuity is a very important factor.
“We’ve had Zak extending his contract and we have a long-term commitment with both Oscar and Lando. The extension of my contract adds an additional element to that, as Team Principal.
“This will give the team the stability to keep increasing their knowledge and to continue to improve our standards from an operational, reliability, and performance point of view, and also to continue to build the relationships that are so fundamental to success.”
Andrea has risen through the ranks at McLaren, joining in 2015 as Head of Operations, one year before Zak Brown became McLaren Racing CEO. Andrea went on to become Racing Director in 2019 before being promoted to Team Principal in December 2022.
Between them, Zak and Andrea have driven progress on and off track, with a series of major infrastructure upgrades, a new Technical Team structure, and an overhauled car design.
They’ve also finely-tuned the team’s culture with a focus on empowerment. These key changes have seen us go from competing at the back of the grid to the front, becoming genuine championship contenders in 2024.
“The aspect that I am most proud of is how far the team, our group of people, have come from a cultural point of view,” Andrea continues. “This is important because our culture, values, and personal relationships are the ground on which we can grow our individual talent.
“This is the fertile ground that empowers our people to use their talents, to know they are trusted and to have confidence. I think that this is the single most important factor that has allowed for the amazing turnaround that we have achieved at McLaren.”
For Zak and Andrea, this is only the beginning of the journey. Andrea penned his fresh deal ahead of the summer break, with McLaren second in the Constructors’ Championship, 42 points behind first place, having won two Grands Prix and one Sprint. We’ve also achieved two poles and a further 10 podiums, with 10 rounds remaining.
“Internally at McLaren, we say 'let's keep growing, let's keep building', and I am pleased to say that, personally, I will keep growing and keep building at McLaren for a long time.
“I'm so proud and privileged to be in a position to serve the team in my role as Team Principal and very excited to see what we will be able to achieve in the future together.”
