The Monaco Grand Prix and the Indy 500 according to social media
Talk about a weekend for the sporting purists. The Indy 500, the Monaco Grand Prix and the UEFA Champions League final date back a combined 273 years in some form or another, and all three of them took place during 48 hours of madness this weekend. And what a weekend it was.
As the only team to be involved in two of those three events, it was marked the culmination of the biggest and best month of the year. The month of May, the Month of McLaren, MaycLaren, call it what you like, but what underpinned it all was you, the fans. We'd spent the month trying to link two sides of the Atlantic and we were blown away by your support.
In Monaco, the weekend began with the heart-warming addition of Ayrton Senna's name to the MCL36, where it will now remain permanently. Unveiled at the Grand Prix where he holds the record for race wins, it's safe to say it went down a storm…
As did Lando's own slice of nostalgia.
We'll leave the following to the imagination.
According to the forecast, the weather was also set to go down a storm in Monaco, although there was no sign of it on Friday.
It was a bright first session on-and-off-track as Lando put himself amongst the top five, with Daniel just a tenth further back in P7.
After a long and arduous three-year wait, we finally got to see the grandstands back to full capacity in Monte Carlo. Those of you who packed the Principality streets with Papaya, we salute you.
The same goes to those watching from home, whether you were in Sydney or Scarborough…
Still not fully over the tonsilitis that had dogged his Spanish Grand Prix, Lando proved he was well on the road to recovery with a triumphant effort in qualifying, making it to Q3 with the fifth-fastest time overall.
It was a frustrating session for Daniel on the other side of the garage, as he showed plenty of promise in Q1 but fell short in Q2, finishing 14th. As always, you had his back, team papaya.
We returned with some more nostalgia ahead of the race.
Errmmm, has anyone seen the graphic of Kimi, or the two bottles of champagne, since Sunday?
The rain we'd been promised finally arrived just in time for the race, although there was a little too much of the wet stuff, and the action was delayed.
@AndyRobinson100 could have completed the swimming leg of his triathlon in Monaco.
At least we were all in it together.
Well, some of us were anyway…
Showoffs.
Why did you have to go there, @lemonboyhope?
Thankfully, we finally got out on track, but if it had been delayed any longer, we'd have been banging our heads against the wall.
We wonder whether it was delayed enough for @KelseaWebbx to finish work?
Or for @kirstyamcd to arrive in the Isle of Wight?
The rain had eased but not gone away, and we couldn't help but think one man would have approved of the conditions.
So how did the soggy surface affect things? Well, not very much, in honesty. By the chequered flag, Daniel had gained a position, finishing 13th, whilst Lando had lost a spot, dropping to sixth. However, the team had treated us to a pinch of action in the closing stages, as they pulled Lando in for a fourth stop, handed him some shiny new Mediums, and sent him off in pursuit of the fastest lap.
By the chequered flag, we'd worked up quite the appetite, any chance of a slice?
As one major event finished, the second began. The rain-enforced delays had bridged the gap between the end of the Monaco Grand Prix and the start of the Indianapolis 500, meaning we'd not have to wait long for further action.
Is it just us, or does Felix remind you of someone?
Ahh, we know who it is!
We loved having James Corden with us in Miami for The Late Late Show, but we think Pato O'Ward and Felix Rosenqvist might be able to give him a run for his money after their presenting debut in Indianapolis.
And what a show they put on for us on track. Pato and Felix were in the hunt for victory from the first to the last of 200 electrifying laps of action, finishing second and fourth, respectively. Meanwhile, Juan Pablo Montoya fought valiantly from 30th to 11th with an overtake-laden recovery drive.
We imagine there were a few sore throats (and heads) on Monday morning…
As always, you were with us through thick and thin, and we love you for it.
Rest up team, we'll be Bak(u) in less than two weeks.
