The best moments from the Monaco Grand Prix

Broken records, Ricky Bobby references, and a race across the world: A fly on the wall look at this weekend's action on and off-track

Welcome to our regular post-race round-up, a final look at the action, where we’ll break down the best and the bonkers of F1 from across the weekend. From our favourite photos to the slickest fits we spotted, plus all the behind-the-scenes goodness you might have missed.

The 2025 Monaco Grand Prix will be remmembered fondly in the McLaren history books, as Lando broke the track record and added his name to the illustrious list of drivers to have won for us in the principality. With Oscar in third, it marked our sixth double podium of the season, as we extended our lead in the Constructors’ Championship.

Away from the track, fans were treated to their usual cocktail of Monaco magic, as we rolled out a retro-themed livery enhancement, complete with Bruce McLaren-inspired race suits, did our best Ricky Bobby impression, and challenged travel YouTuber Simon Wilson to make his way to Monaco from Bruce’s hometown in New Zealand in time for the race.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience

Even as the Formula 1 calendar has expanded and exciting new venues have been added, the 78-lap race around the iconic streets of Monte Carlo has never lost its appeal. The Monaco Grand Prix has stood the test of time and remains the crown jewel of the now 24-race season.

It’s one of the most prestigious sporting events of the year - no Grand Prix is quite able to capture the imagination in the way Monaco does, drawing stars from the world of sport, music, and film. For many fans, it remains a bucket-list race.

These three were among those lucky enough to be in attendance this weekend, with a stunning view of the track as the cars raced to a backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea and Monaco’s famous yacht-lined harbour.

Quote of the weekend
Channelling our inner Ricky Bobby

"Gonna go real fast, and real left.”

It’s been nearly 20 years since Talladega Nights was released, but Will Ferrell’s fictional racer, Ricky Bobby, lives on in the hearts of drivers and race fans alike. The film’s protagonist, a legendary NASCAR driver, is regularly referenced in the F1 paddock. This weekend, it was Oscar bringing the Ricky Bobby energy to F1, quoting the Talladega Nights character on his way into the paddock when he arrived on Saturday morning.

Record breaker, history maker

After 75 years of Formula 1 racing in Monaco, records are hard to come by.

It’s arguably the track at which the driver can make the biggest difference. Car performance is less important than confidence and the ability to drive on the limit and get close to the walls.

With Monaco native Charles Leclerc on provisional Pole in the dying stages of Q3, Lando’s final lap would need to be something special. Under immense pressure on the biggest stage, he delivered a flawless tour of the track to not only take Pole from the Monegasque but also set a new track record.

Legends are made in Monaco, and this lap put Lando among the greats.

A champagne spike to savour

As if it could be anything else.

It was a statement win from Lando, who achieved a childhood dream by standing on the top step in Monte Carlo. He had already made history with his record-breaking Pole lap on Saturday, but achieving McLaren’s 16th victory in the principality - six more than any other team - cements this as a truly historic weekend in his career.

The British driver more than earned the acclaim, taking a hard-fought first place. He held the net lead throughout, but had to keep his nerve as Max Verstappen chose to take his second pit stop deep into the race, the Dutchman hoping for a late Safety Car, which thankfully never came.

By the time Verstappen had relinquished the lead of the race to pit, Lando had lost significant time while stuck behind him and needed to sustain heavy pressure from Charles Leclerc, who had been able to catch up during the Red Bull driver's prolonged stint at the front.

He managed it brilliantly and, at the end of the race, clambered out of the car for an emotional celebration with his family, who were in Monaco to watch his triumph. He then took to the top step to perform an extra-special champagne spike – his trademark move on the podium.

A challenge with a twist

If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

While Lando and Oscar were getting ready to race in Monaco, McLaren fan and travel YouTuber Simon Wilson was racing to get to the track in time for Sunday’s Grand Prix. After receiving a cheeky message from the Welshman on Instagram, asking if we could sneak him into the garage, we posed a unique McLaren-themed challenge to him.

We weren’t going to let Simon in without him first singing for his supper, and so we set him the task of making his way to Monaco from our founder Bruce McLaren’s childhood home in Auckland, New Zealand.

And we weren’t going to make it easy. Simon’s route to the principality would be dictated by the roll of a dice. In a four-part series broadcast to his 1.4m subscribers, Simon successfully navigated his route to Monaco, where he met up with the team to enjoy Lando’s famous Grand Prix victory.

Outfit of the weekend
Rolling back the years

As always, there were some incredible outfits on show in Monaco, as fans took to the grandstands in their Sunday best and A-listers revealed their race day looks, but for all of the glitz and glamour, it was Lando and Oscar’s race suits that stole the show.

We were celebrating our heritage this weekend with a special one-off livery enhancement, inspired by our first race-winning Formula 1 car, the M7A. As part of this, Lando and Oscar took to the track in overalls similar to those worn by Bruce McLaren. Designed to emulate Bruce’s suit from 1968, they featured the iconic side stripe and the same font and numbering from that era.

The last leg of this European triple header. We’re making our way to Spain, aiming to extend our run of consecutive podium-scoring weekends this season to nine.
