The best moments from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix

Myth-busting, meeting up with your heroes, and making cars out of pasta: A fly on the wall look at this weekend's action on and off-track

Welcome to our regular post-race round-up, a final look at the action, where we’ll break down the best and the bonkers of F1 from across the weekend. From our favourite photos to the slickest fits we spotted, plus all the behind-the-scenes goodness you might have missed.

After six rounds of flyaway events, we returned to Europe for the season’s second triple header, kicking off this weekend in Imola. Lando and Oscar ensured our record of scoring at least one podium per round continued, taking our fifth double of the season and our 12th top-three finish overall, the pair having notched six each.

But it wasn’t all about the on-track action, although there was plenty of it as the grid proved that overtaking is possible around Imola’s narrow, winding turns. Away from the racing, Lando caught up with one of his heroes, Oscar was recreated in pizza, and we asked the big life questions.

Reunited with racing royalty

Lando grew up watching Valentino Rossi making history in MotoGP and has often cited the nine-time Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Champion as one of his racing heroes.

It was while watching Rossi winning titles in MotoGP that Lando’s love of racing was born, and the British driver has openly discussed the influence the Italian legend has had on him, even adorning special helmets and race boots inspired by Rossi.

Lando has been lucky enough to meet his hero before – Rossi even messaged Lando ahead of his final MotoGP race - and the pair enjoyed the chance to catch up in Imola, as the Italian visited the McLaren garage and Team Hub.

Who wants a pizza Oscar?

Slice to meet you, Oscar Pizza-stri… Italy is famous for many things, including its food, Formula 1 fandom, and fine art, but rarely are those three things combined.

We’re not sure whether the measurements were exactly to scale, but after making a rather unusual promise, @adfreebrowsing delivered this tasty version of our Australian hero.

It’s tricky to tell, but it looks like a capricciosa, which Oscar revealed as his favourite type of pizza during the weekend. Either way, you certainly can’t accuse them of skimping on the toppings.

Moment of the weekend
Myth-busting

Imola is known to be notoriously difficult to overtake on, but Lando and Oscar proved this age-old adage wrong on Sunday, with the duo pulling off multiple manoeuvres during an entertaining 63-lap Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

Pick of the bunch was arguably Lando’s first move of the Grand Prix.

When it is possible, overtaking in Imola is usually restricted to the first turn, but Lando opted for an ambitious move on George Russell going into Villeneuve – not a place you usually see drivers battling. Lando had been sizing up the Mercedes for several corners, looking left and right, before opting to go around the outside of Russell with a delightful pass.

It proved pivotal in his race to second, as Lando notched his sixth podium of the season.

Quote of the weekend
So many pasta-bilities

“I feel like spaghetti may have been the better answer there.”

Even before @adfreebrowsing had baked his Oscar Pizza-stri, food was dominating early conversations in Imola, through commonly asked questions like whether pineapple should be on pizza to the best pasta shape and sauce combination.

However, there was one slightly more… unique query, as Oscar was asked which pasta shape he would make a Formula 1 race car out of.

Now, it goes without saying that none of them would fare particularly well in the rain (perhaps we’d need to switch out the pasta cars for the LEGO ones on a wet weekend), but some answers do appear to be better than others, as Oscar realised midway through his response. Having initially said penne, he later recognised spaghetti might have been a better option. We wonder, had he considered lasagna?

Ohh, and don’t ask him for any Italian gestures either - his Italian heritage only stretches to “the rude ones”.

Outfit of the weekend
Painting the town papaya

Imola is famously full of fans wearing red during a Formula 1 race weekend – although, as Lando pointed out in his post-race debrief, if you turn the hue down, it looks a lot like papaya – but the McLaren fanbase did a fantastic job of packing out the grandstands with our colours this weekend.

This included some awesome fits, as fans turned up in their chosen McLaren merch. With so many of you dressed so well, it was impossible to choose just one look, but this was among our favourites.

Senna sempre

Imola is among our favourite circuits on the calendar, thanks to its intoxicating combination of racing heritage, picturesque landscapes, and historic medieval towns, but it’s also a race tinged with sadness.

Ayrton Senna tragically lost his life while racing at Imola 31 years ago. As we do on every visit to Imola, we paid a visit to the circuit’s Ayrton Senna memorial and took a moment to remember the Brazilian racing legend.

During our visit to the memorial, we spent some time capturing the beautiful tributes paid to Ayrton, a reminder that his legacy lives on in the hearts of fans around the world.

What’s next?

The European season continues as we make the trip from Imola to the crown jewel of the Formula 1 calendar, Monaco, for the second race of this triple header.
