“I’m very excited to head to Tokyo, especially after such a strong weekend last time out in São Paulo. I think Tokyo is a great addition to the Formula E calendar, and I’m confident it’ll be a very exciting event. There are lots of different corner types and I’ve heard it’s particularly bumpy in some sections, so that’ll be an additional challenge.
“We’re carrying good momentum into Round 5 and hopefully we can continue to score decent points for the rest of the season, starting in Tokyo this weekend.”
“I’m really looking forward to getting out to Tokyo; it’ll be my first time in Japan. I’ve always wanted to visit, let alone race there, so to get to do both with the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team is very special.
“I’m heading into this race following a bit of a difficult result in São Paulo two weeks ago, but as a team we are coming off the last event with a great result, so we’re in a strong position with the car. We’ve definitely improved it from last season – we've shown that in the last few races – so we’re heading into Tokyo with confidence and the knowledge that we have a car that can fight.
“I’m looking forward to this week, and getting back towards scoring points and fighting for podiums.”
“The Tokyo E-Prix is set to be an incredible event. Tokyo is amongst the most iconic cities in the world, renowned for its culture and tech industry, and therefore such a fitting backdrop for this World Championship. I’m proud that we as the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team are going to be part of something unique.
“We’re heading into the Tokyo E-Prix weekend with a confidence boost, following our win at the São Paulo E-Prix. Seeing the team clinch the first-ever fully-electric win for McLaren Racing was something incredibly special. The team has been working hard on ensuring that we put ourselves in the best position possible to replicate this success.
“São Paulo was a great weekend for the team overall. We showed good pace and it was proof for us as a team that we are able to capitalise on opportunities throughout the race - something we struggled with last season. Having said that, there were plenty of opportunities for further improvement which were noted throughout the weekend.
“Tokyo is going to bring us lots of new challenges… it’s a completely different type of track. Not to forget: it’s an entirely new challenge for the whole field. It’s going to be exciting to see how we will adapt. See you in Tokyo!”
Sam drove to victory, taking the lead on the last lap, at Round 4 in São Paulo
Last time out
Like you need reminding.
You all know what happened last time out, but we’ll never get tired of talking about it. At the São Paulo E-Prix just under two weeks ago, Sam Bird raced to NEOM McLaren’s first-ever electric racing victory.
The win was achieved in epic fashion, with Sam pulling off a stunning overtake on Mitch Evans for the lead on the last lap of the race to clinch his first victory in three years, putting him behind only Sébastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi for most FE victories, with 12.
On the other side of the garage, Jake endured a tougher time of things, suffering from an unfortunate DNF, and will be hoping to bounce back in Japan.
