The Austrian Grand Prix according to social media
In last week’s instalment of ‘That Was The Weekend That Was’, we talked of a suspicion that history might repeat itself at the Red Bull Ring. And while it didn’t quite happen first time out in Austria this season, second time around it certainly did. Almost a year to the day since his maiden Formula 1 podium, Lando Norris was on the rostrum again in Spielberg. Every podium is special but what made this one that little bit sweeter was the pace we showed; but for a five-second time penalty, it’s possible to argue that Lando could have finished second. The positives on Sunday didn’t stop there though, as Daniel Ricciardo put in a great recovery drive to bounce back from a tough qualifying and cap what’s been a strong triple-header for the team. Here’s what social media made of it all…
Although Daniel’s qualifying didn’t go quite as well as hoped, P13 was far from game over at the Red Bull Ring – a circuit where overtaking is possible. He had a wealth of strategy options open to him and could choose to start the race on the preferred Medium tyre in his bid to fight back through the pack.
On the other side of the garage, Lando fared much better and was just 0.048s off pole. To put it another way, that’s the length of two Landos. P2, his best qualifying result in F1 and McLaren’s first front-row start for nine years, was still a fantastic achievement and summed up pretty well by McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown on social afterwards:
Lando was understandably pretty happy after qualifying and couldn’t resist popping into shot as McLaren F1 Team principal Andreas Seidl reflected on a memorable day:
There was only a two-year age gap between Sunday’s front-row starters, but you wouldn’t think it looking at this photo…
There was no escaping the orange army during the weekend. But was it in Spielberg for Max Verstappen or McLaren – or both? We’ll let you decide.
Starting P13, Daniel had ground to make up in the race and wasted no time fighting his way into the points, ultimately finishing P7.
Having kept Lewis Hamilton at bay for 20 laps, Lando received high praise from the seven-time champ.
But would go on to pass Lewis later in the race to secure a coveted spot on the podium.
P3 and P7 made for a very happy Zak Brown…
And very happy fans...
Many of you voted Lando driver of the day:
We’re pretty sure we know where Jeremy Clarkson’s vote went too…
