When he first started racing in the 1950s he did so in bare feet. He reckoned it gave him a better feel for the throttle.
The New Zealander first competed alongside his compatriot Bruce McLaren in Can-Am and the series was dubbed the Bruce and Denny Show. His gruff attitude gave him the label ‘The Bear’ and his courage exemplified when he raced on in the wake of Bruce’s death. Once, after suffering terrible burns to his hands in a testing accident at Indy, Hulme was soon back in the cockpit.
But at the end of that drive, one of his hands was stuck to the steering wheel.
