Mark Temple
Technical Director, Performance
Mark was appointed as Technical Director – Performance in May 2024 as part of Andrea Stella's F1 Technical Executive Team. He has worked at McLaren for more than two decades, originally joining in October 2003.
He has worked a wide variety of roles during his rise through the ranks at McLaren, including as a Race Engineer for Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez, Kevin Magnussen, and Fernando Alonso.
After starting as a Transmission Designer in 2003, Mark moved into the Vehicle Technology Team in 2005, specialising in suspension and ride analysis, before joining the Test Team as an Assistant Test Engineer in 2008 and the Race Team as a Tactician and Operations Engineer in 2009.
For the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Mark was the Performance Engineer for McLaren’s 2008 Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton. He became Hamilton’s Race Engineer at the end of 2012, having spent most of the season running race weekend simulator support.
Mark became a full-time Race Engineer in 2013, working for Sergio Perez, Kevin Magnussen, and then Fernando Alonso until the end of 2017, when he switched to a factory-based role as Team Leader for Sim Development.
Possessing experience in both trackside and factory-based roles, Mark became Principal Performance Engineer in 2019 with a mandate to forge stronger links between the two, whilst assessing the car’s strengths and weaknesses.
This role progressed, and in 2023, following the restructuring of McLaren’s Technical Team, Mark formed the Car, Driver and Competitor Performance Team, which was focused on assessing the team’s performance relative to competitors. Following his promotion in 2024, Mark now leads the Performance and Concept Department, which includes Vehicle Performance, Tyres & Brakes, and Driver & Competitor Performance teams.
Known for taking a holistic view of performance, Mark will focus on how we can gain understanding from objective data and subjective comments and opinions, which he will use to unlock potential.
