Day 5 report: Indy 500
Wet weather hampers play
Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Friday 19 May
FERNANDO ALONSO, McLaren Honda Andretti driver
Day: 5 | Top speed: 231.827mph | Laps: 46 |
Bad weather was the main headline on the last full day of practice, as rain and lightning caused a two hour delay in running.
After the conditions settled Fernando recorded a total of 46 laps, reaching a top speed of 231.827mph following Fast Friday's increase in engine power.
"It’s going to be interesting to see what trim configuration the team decides to ultimate. We will see tomorrow’s conditions, how they are and how much we can push in terms of trimming the car. Tomorrow is about doing a good four laps, hopefully in the first nine and wait for Sunday for the real final classification.
"Tomorrow is another day, but for me, in my case, it is another learning day. We’ll see what we can do but there’s not much pressure for tomorrow".
Overall the McLaren Honda Andretti driver finished 4th fastest on the time sheets ahead of Saturday's qualifying.
McLaren Executive Director Zak Brown later pulled out number 33 for Fernando's main car and number eight for his backup car in the qualifying running order.
