MONACO MAGIC

How Senna held off Mansell

Monaco magic Sponsor

It all changed on lap 71. Mansell roared into the Monaco pits to change his tyres and something other than a Williams-Renault led a lap in 1992. On fresh rubber, he charged back up to Senna. The lap record slashed.

The lead cut from 5.1s to 4.3s to 1.9s in successive laps – with just three to go. “I knew there was no way I could beat him, it was impossible with the superiority of his car,” said Senna, but he held on. “You never know what can happen at Monaco.”

The victory earned the Brazilian the Graham Hill Trophy in recognition of matching the Englishman’s record of wins on the Principality’s streets.
