Getting to know: Igor Fraga
Can this finalist earn the coveted McLaren Shadow crown?
Japanese-born Brazilian Igor Fraga is one to watch, according to his fellow finalists.
The 20-year-old qualified for McLaren Shadow via the Logitech G Challenge, and earned his place at the grand finals with some killer performances at the semis; finishing P1 at two out of five races.
A story familiar to many, Igor’s hopes of a real-life driving career fell apart due to lack of budget, with the gamer then turning to esports. Impressing many, he continues to add titles to his name - including the FIA Gran Turismo Nations Cup.
As Igor prepares for the ever-closer McLaren Shadow showdown, get to know our next finalist.
What’s your favourite type of car to race online?
It's a tricky question because I like so many cars... But I love challenging cars, the ones that gives you adrenaline and emotion driving them.
What’s your favourite racing game?
My favourite racing game is Gran Turismo. I started to play when I was three years old and I have lot of memories from it.
Favourite non-racing game?
I don't play many other games nowadays, but I think it's Tetris. I spend always a good time on the aeroplane playing it when I'm travelling around. I feel bad when I’m on a flight and I can’t game!

Favourite (real-life) racing driver?
It's Ayrton Senna. My grandfather used to send me video tapes of him, and I was fascinated by his driving style.Â
Favourite (real-life) race track?
Interlagos is my favourite racing track I raced in real life, and my favourite racing track that I’ve driven virtually is Nürburgring. I really want to go there one day to do at least a track day.
What does McLaren mean to you?
McLaren means great history, and a team that I would love to be part of.Â
What gave you the edge to make it through?
I believe that it was my desire to win and the hard work I put in. I truly believe that hard work pays off.

Any tips for healthy, fun gaming?
For me, gaming has to have some competition involved. In this context, I like to compare myself to… myself. You don't win all the time, but if you see that you’ve grown, it gives you more motivation to overcome your struggles. Of course I compare myself to the other players, but I believe that it’s much more important to focus on yourself.
When you’re not working/gaming, what are you doing?
Sometimes I do voluntary work for social projects. I see my girlfriend, play with my dog, play some guitar (which I'm not that good at!), watch movies, and spend time with family.
How are you going to prepare for the McLaren Shadow Grand Finals?
Practicing a lot in all five different games, and exercising every day as my routine. Also trying to fix my weak points and be very consistent overall.
Who do you see as your biggest competiton?
This is the final, so I believe that all the other drivers have a chance to win the competition. Due to this, I prefer to think more about what I have to do.
The world's biggest esports racing competition will feature four days of intense tests and race offs, with two of the days streamed via our YouTube channel on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 January 2019.
