Attending the Indy 500?
How to make the Brickyard feel like your backyard
The iconic Indianapolis 500 is less than a month away.
If you’re making the trip to the Brickyard, let us help you make the most of your time with our guide to attending the Indy 500.
Inside the Speedway
The in-field at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) is more than 500 acres. Here’s what to look out for:
Golf: There isn’t a more iconic golf course for race fans. The Speedway Crossing was recently voted one of America’s top 100 public golf courses and four of its 18 holes are located inside the confines of the Speedway.
Coke Lot: A campsite that can accommodate up to 15,000 people. The atmosphere is fantastic and even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth a visit.
The Motorhome Lot: Most of the drivers stay in motorhomes during race week. They park together in what’s called the Motorhome Lot, on the inside of Turn 1, and it’s a great place for autograph hunters - known in Indiana as Alley Cats.
Where to race
For those wanting to have a go themselves...
Speedway Indoor Karting (1067 N Main Street):Â Set up by former Indy racer Sarah Fisher, this karting facility offers great value for money. Get on-track for as little as $15.
McLaren Grandstand Packages
There’s a crowd of more than 250,000 people and we’re offering you one of the best seats in the house. You can watch the race from the McLaren Grandstand, located at the North East Vista of the circuit. We’ll throw in a goodie bag stuffed with team merchandise and several lucky prize winners will be given an exclusive look at Fernando Alonso’s IndyCar and an opportunity to have breakfast with the team.

Where to eat
Indianapolis offers a huge variety of restaurants to fit every budget. Here’s where we went during the week of the Open Test:
Union Jack Pub (6225 W 25th Street): Located a stone’s throw from the Speedway, this pub is a race fans dream. It has memorabilia all over the walls and sells itself on pizza and beer. If you visit, look out for team mechanics.
McGilvery’s Pub (3009 N High School Road): This place is fun to visit, especially on a Tuesday night when local DJ Don Kay hosts his radio show from the bar.
St Elmo’s Steak House (127 Illinois Street): Opened in 1902, St Elmo’s is the oldest steakhouse in Indianapolis. Over the past 115-odd years its chefs have perfected how to cook beef.
Foyt Wine Vault (1182 Main Street): Opened in 2015 by Indy legend AJ Foyt, who made a record 35 consecutive starts in the 500, the Vault sells wines for every palette and wallet, and has a great menu to go with it.
See you there, folks!
