Netflix and Chill-i?
Carlos Sainz gives us his Netflix recommendations
With many of us suddenly finding that we’ve got much more time to spend at home, the ability to watch a show on Netflix has never been so important or, for that matter, liberating. But just what exactly should you stream? If anything, there’s too much choice. And too much choice can be a bad thing.
So if you find yourself in a viewing quandary or rocking back and forth in the foetal position at the thought of watching The Shawshank Redemption for the 27th time, help is it hand.
We dropped Carlos a line and here are his top five Netflix recommendations to get you through the next few weeks, or possibly days – depending on your propensity to binge-watch.
1. Formula 1: Drive to Survive
2019 | Rated: 15 | 2 Seasons | US TV Programmes
Carlos says: “No need to explain why, the team and myself are in it!”
Okay, we could have guessed this one. Carlos’ first pick is Netflix’s TV documentary featuring the wonderful world of F1. Now in its second season, the series gives insight into life behind the scenes with the drivers, team principals and even the sport’s owners. It’s candid, and popcorn worthy.
Appealing to both casual and avid fans of the sport, you’d be foolish to miss this one.
2. Peaky Blinders
2013 | Rated: 18 | 4 Seasons | Drama Programmes
Carlos says: “Great main character, and helps me improve my Birmingham accent.”
'By order of the Peaky Blinders!' Now imagine Carlos saying that, but in a Brummie accent. Now imagine Carlos saying that in a Brummie accent, with a razor-sharp short back and sides, while donning a flat cap and a fine piece of face fuzz. That’s basically the show. Okay, we’re being unfair. There’s way more to it than that, from a riveting storyline to superb acting, not least by Cillian Murphy who plays Carlos’ favourite character.
If you enjoy gripping crime dramas, this one’s for you.
3. Money Heist
2017 | Rated: 18 | 3 Seasons | Award-winning TV Programmes
Carlos says: “Best ever Spanish series, El Professor is a legend worldwide right now.”
Before you say it, no, El Professor is not based on F1’s very own Prof, Alain Prost. It’s about a criminal mastermind who goes by the name of "The Professor" and has a plan to pull off the biggest heist in recorded history – printing billions of euros in the Royal Mint of Spain. The characters speak Spanish, but the episodes are dubbed in English, so not only can you follow the story, but you can improve your Spanish too. Bueno.
Another crime drama for the list and one that’s perfect for our Madrid-native driver!
4. Don't F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer
2019 | Rated: 18 | 1 Season | US TV Programmes
Carlos says: “Good insight into the deep world of internet and what happens when people dedicate themselves to a cause.”
This one’s not for the faint-hearted. If you haven’t already binge-watched the show, it’s based on a true story about one of Canada's most infamous murderers and how the internet played a huge part in the disturbing story.
Much like the Nürburgring, it’s addictive, twisted and fascinating.
5. Manhunt Unabomber
2017 | Rated: 15 | 1 Season | US TV Programmes
Carlos says: “Story I had never heard of, but the way they get to the suspect is truly incredible.”
Rewinding back to the 90s, this mini-series tells the true story of the FBI’s hunt for the ‘Unabomber’, an American terrorist. Faced with few clues and an increasingly panicked public, the FBI calls on a new kind of profiler to help track him down.
Carlos loved it, and you should too.
