The Spanish Grand Prix according to social media
After a start to the season that’s seen us bag a trio of top-five finishes, including a podium, coming home sixth and eighth in the Spanish Grand Prix might not sound like much. But, at a track where overtaking is notoriously difficult, this was a solid, if not spectacular, result for the team. We leave the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with plenty of positives: Daniel had his strongest weekend of the season so far, the upgrades we brought to Spain delivered a step forward in performance, and we remain the only team to have scored double points in every race this year – a result that keeps us third in the Constructors’ Championship, albeit just five points ahead of our great rival – and friend – Ferrari.
Here’s what social media made of it all…
On Friday, there was an unexpected call for McLaren underwear and nightwear. While #TheFifthDriver was a little taken aback by the question, it sounds like there may be demand for a new product line on the McLaren Store. We’re sure the likes of Ann Summers and Victoria’s Secret are quaking in their latex boots at the thought of a pair of Strategy Briefs from the Randy Singh Collection – and if they’re not, we certainly are.
While some were calling for underwear, others were just happy to receive a thumbs up from McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown.
With its neck-wrenching, high-speed corners and aggressive kerbs, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya can really take its toll on the body and mind of a driver – and even those of you watching at home. Just as well there were plenty of tasty treats flying around this weekend to keep everyone powered up; Mary Berry would have been proud of the cakes on display across social and the rain stayed away from the track – just – meaning there were no soggy bottoms.
Coincidentally, the paddock was alight with the rumour that a new television series, The Great British Rake Off, is in the works. If true, Mick Schumacher’s legendary Schu buns are sure to make him the bookies’ early favourite, but he’ll face stiff competition from Lewis Hamilton’s ‘Still I Rise’ soufflés.
Away from the baking, @AndyRobinson100 provided his prediction for qualifying and was half-right:
It also turns out you can take the boy out of McLaren, but you can’t take McLaren out of the boy:
That’s the thing about McLaren: once the magic of the team gets under your skin, we’re with you for life – unless you opt for excruciatingly painful laser removal. Just ask @Nathanings…
From one art form to another:
With a tantalising race in prospect, @elliemai_thom asked:
The answer: No. No, it’s not.
Following a rocket start to catapult up to fifth from seventh on the grid, Daniel did a stellar job to keep Sergio Pérez in the faster Red Bull behind him for much of the Spanish Grand Prix.
While Lando’s move on Kimi Räikkönen later in the race also got plenty of love on social:
And then, after his second pit-stop, Daniel pulled a move on Esteban Ocon to regain P6…
Exactly.
With Lando and Daniel both safely home in the points, one place higher than they started at a circuit where overtaking is far from easy, fans were full of praise for good day’s work on track:
It sure can @OneEyesOfRacing. It sure can.
Monaco baby, here we come!
