Gotta collect ‘em all: Scrutineering our LEGO® sets offering

The lowdown on all seven McLaren LEGO sets currently available

LEGO

Motorheads and LEGO bricks lovers united in a frenzy three years ago, when we teamed up with the Danish construction toy company to produce and release the first-ever LEGO Technic incarnation of an F1 car.

Following the success of our inaugural release, we’ve now produced four more McLaren Racing cars, in addition to our McLaren Automotive offering, which has previously included the McLaren P1, the 720S, the Elva, the Senna and the Senna GTR.

To celebrate our latest two launches, the McLaren MCL60 and the MP4/4, we’ve detailed our complete current offering of racing and automotive LEGO cars, telling their stories and detailing their size and cost.

McLaren MP4/4

The greatest Formula 1 car ever made? Quite possibly. The greatest LEGO set ever made? For us at McLaren: No doubt.

Winning 15 out of 16 races and claiming pole 15 times in 1988, the MP4/4 was an absolute animal on track, and a beauty to behold off it, painted in our iconic red and white livery.

Raced by Formula 1 Drivers’ Champion Ayrton Senna and vice-champion Alain Prost to the Teams’ Championship, the MP4/4 is never far from the conversation when fans discuss the greatest race cars of all time. By the end of the ’88 F1 season, we had scored almost three times as many points as second-placed Ferrari, with their driver, Gerhard Berger, a distant third in the standings.

The 1.5 litre Honda RA168E V6 turbo engine was, at times, putting out more than 700 bhp. Wrapped up in the team’s famed Carbon Fibre monocoque, it weighed 540 kgs. Its LEGO set counterpart may weigh a little less, but it looks no less stunning.

Complete with working steering, rod suspension and an adjustable rear wing, the car comes with an Ayrton Senna minifigure and its own display stand. The LEGO Icons McLaren MP4/4 racing car in this 693-piece LEGO set measures more than five inches in height, is 12.5 inches long and 6.5 inches wide.

McLaren MCL60

While the MP4/4 is known as one of F1’s most dominant cars, the MCL60 is arguably responsible for F1’s greatest turnaround.

Named the MCL60 in celebration of our team’s 60th anniversary, the car initially flattered to deceive at the start of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship season, struggling in the opening rounds as the team worked hard in the background on a series of major upgrades.

Once these upgrades were delivered, we never looked back, taking 285 points from the Austrian Grand Prix onwards, with only Max Verstappen scoring more points than Lando, while Oscar became the first rookie since Lewis Hamilton to take multiple podiums in his rookie season.

The LEGO Speed Champions 2023 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car is wrapped in our black-and-papaya livery and comes complete with all our sponsorship logos from 2023, including the beloved Google Chrome wheels, and a racing driver minifigure. The McLaren MCL60 comprises 245 pieces and is 1.5 inches high, seven inches long and 2.5 inches wide.

NEOM McLaren Extreme E car

The NEOM McLaren Extreme E car marked our debut in the world of electric racing and our first experience of off-road racing.

Throughout our 60-year history, we’ve competed in sports cars, F1 cars, Can-Am cars and IndyCars, but nothing quite like the Odyssey 21, which is vastly different from anything we’ve ever raced before. Despite this, we’ve managed a podium in all three seasons to date, including in the recent opening round of the 2024 season in Saudi Arabia.

The fully electric SUV was designed by Spark Racing Technologies to withstand harsh conditions, as we compete in remote locations in Saudi Arabia, Italy and the USA. The car’s peak 470 kw (630 bhp) output is capable of firing the 1,780 kgs, 2.3 metres wide e-SUV from 0-100 km/h in under five seconds, barrelling up a 50-degree slope.

The LEGO Technic NEOM McLaren Extreme E car wears our black-and-papaya livery and comes complete with chunky off-road tyres and pull-back action. This 252-piece set measures more than three inches high, and is seven inches long and four inches wide.

NEOM McLaren Formula E car

The NEOM McLaren Formula E car was our first electric single-seater but is the third generation of Formula E racing car, unveiled ahead of the 2022/23 season, which was to be our FE debut.

Built by Spark Racing Technologies and powered by a Nissan powertrain, the battery-powered single-seater produces 300 kW - roughly 402 bhp – and is capable of reaching 200 mph, just 20 mph less than an F1 car.

Driven by Jake Hughes to two pole positions and by René Rast to a podium in our debut season, we carried the car over into the 2023/24 season, with Sam Bird replacing René behind the wheel.

The black-and-papaya liveried LEGO Technic NEOM McLaren Formula E car features pull-back action and steering functionality. It is 452 pieces in total and measures 2.5 inches high, 12 inches long and 4.5 inches wide.

McLaren Formula 1 car

The largest of the lot, and the first LEGO McLaren Formula 1 car that we released. LEGO Group design experts worked in tandem with our Formula 1 design team to produce a model that reflected a combination of our 2021 and 2022 cars.

The 2021 MCL35M famously finished first and second in the Italian Grand Prix, as well as notching five podiums overall, including at the Monaco Grand Prix. Meanwhile, the 2022 MCL36 marked a new generation of Formula 1 cars following a massive regulations overhaul and scored one podium.

The 2021-livered LEGO Technic model features a V6 cylinder engine with moving pistons, steering activated from the cockpit, suspension, and a differential lock. Measuring over five inches in height, it is 25.5 inches long, and 10.5 inches wide, comprising 1,432 pieces.

McLaren Solus GT

The McLaren Solus GT is a supercar that was born in the virtual racing world, debuting in Sony Interactive Entertainment game Gran Turismo Sport, before becoming a reality.

Only 25 of the McLaren Solus GT will ever be produced, making it ultra rare. Its extreme design, which features a central closed cockpit and jet aircraft-style canopy, means it is as close to the experience and feel of driving a Formula 1 car as you can get in a hypercar.

The track-only hypercar has a 5.2 litre V10 engine that revs beyond 10,000 rpm and generates more than 840 PS, with a top speed of beyond 200 mph. The LEGO Speed Champions Solus GT features a central driving seat and a rear wing.

McLaren F1 LM

Widely regarded as the greatest supercar (are you sensing a theme here?) of all time.

Such was the brilliance of the McLaren F1 that our team were pursuaded into creating a race-ready version, which went on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995 at the very first time of asking.

The LM specification was produced in honour of its Le Mans’ winning counterpart, with only five made. Weighing around 1,062 kgs, the F1 LM used the same engine as the 1995 F1 GTR and produced 500 kW (671 hp), with a top speed of 225 mph.

In total, only 106 McLaren F1 supercars were ever produced, making it as exclusive as it was technically brilliant. The F1 remains the fastest naturally aspirated road car ever built and broke numerous records during the ‘90s.

Painted in our historic papaya-colour scheme, the LEGO Speed Champions McLaren F1 LM comes with a central driving seat and cooling ducts on both sides.

The Solus GT and F1 LM come in one blockbuster LEGO Speed Champions set, representing the past and present of McLaren supercars. The kit includes 581 pieces and each car measures 1.5 inches high, 5.5 inches long and 2.5 inches wide.
