The Nürburgring last featured on the Formula 1 calendar in 2013, when it hosted the German Grand Prix. It returns this year, but under a different guise: the Eifel Grand Prix. The circuit has been far from a regular fixture on the calendar: it hosted the 1984 European Grand Prix and the 1985 German Grand Prix but didn’t feature again until 1995.

Located next door to the 14-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife – arguably the greatest circuit in the world – and nestled in the heart of the Eifel mountains, the new track was built in the 1980s in response to the Nordschleife being deemed unsafe for Formula 1, namely after Niki Lauda’s fiery crash in 1976.

Changeable weather often plays a hand in proceedings at this track made up of 15 corners. It has seen some memorable races, including a famous duel between Fernando Alonso at the wheel of the MP4-22 and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa in 2007. Rain caused chaos, particularly in the opening stages, and led to the race being red flagged. After the restart, Alonso eventually triumphed – securing a memorable victory with a scintillating pass around the outside of Massa at Turn Five, just four laps from the end.
