Häkkinen outfoxes Schumacher
Flat-out at 200mph
This was F1 at its purest. The world’s two best drivers of their day and the sport’s two greatest teams: Michael v Mika, Ferrari v McLaren. Flat-out at 200mph.
And the backdrop was the most majestic of them all: Spa-Francorchamps 2000. The previous lap was close, too-close for Mika. He wound himself up to have another go at overtaking the Red Baron. “That moment gave me more courage to be able to say, ‘Okay, you wanna play the game? Let’s play the game.’” Ricardo Zonta’s BAR was a sitting duck, Michael went left, Mika right. He was past in an unforgettable, heart-stopping moment.
