In 1993, Ron Dennis considered buying Ligier to try and secure their supply of Renault engines, but in the end £6 million was invested to develop the Ford HB powerplant.
The state-of-the-art MP4/8 featured new electronic management software, chassis control and telemetry systems and – here’s a revolution – the first McLaren to use barge boards, controlling the airflow around the side of the monocoque and into the radiators. No wonder we applied a sticker of a squished hedgehog on the side of the MP4/8 every time they beat Williams that year…




The MP4/4
The 1988 MP4/4 won 15 of 16 races and scored 199 points in the constructors’ championship, almost three times as much as runners-up Ferrari.
