The deep-reaching technical update for the 2012 McLaren MP4-27 showcased a natural evolution of 2011’s six-race-winning car. The 2012 chassis was substantially revised from the ground-up, with all major systems updated or re-designed for the new season.
The engineering trio Tim Goss, Paddy Lowe and Neil Oatley were at the forefront of the drawing office. They created a more tightly waisted rear bodywork, developed to improve flow to the rear of the car, and a revised cooling system, re-directing the gearbox oil-cooler were the most evident visual differences.
Demonstrating early promise in testing the MP4-27 - Jenson Button went on to win the season opener in Australia with Lewis Hamilton finishing third. The car showed exceptional pace once again in Malaysia, leading the pack until wet weather conditions brought the race to halt, after which both drivers dropped their leading positions.
Hamilton achieved McLaren’s 150th pole position in the German grand prix, and by the end of the season, the car had amassed a collective trophy haul of seven drivers’ titles, and the same in constructors’ wins.
