McLaren Snaps: HEAD CHEF
During the course of the 2016 F1 season, we bring you exclusive access to some of the personalities in the McLaren-Honda Formula 1 team. Meet the men and women who keep the team on track throughout a race weekend, at the circuit and back at the McLaren Technology Centre. This week, the spotlight is on Ian Fletcher, Head Chef for the team's track-side catering company, Absolute Taste.
Making sure the guys are not hungry!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT MCLAREN?
This is my 6th season.
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS:
Serious, pensive and caring.
FAVOURITE RACE LOCATION & WHY?
Austin – the produce is great and there are so many great restaurants to eat at when I get the chance.
FIRST McLAREN MEMORY?
Arriving in China straight from working at the Masters in Augusta to a whole new world of catering! Very jet-lagged and in a whole new world of hospitality gave me a big welcome to Formula 1! The markets and shopping in China are a big challenge for language barriers and produce!
BEST McLAREN MEMORY?
My first race in China 2011, and Lewis winning the race! I imagined it would be like that every week! Hopefully we will be back like that again soon.
FAVOURITE RACE IN McLAREN HISTORY?
Canada 2011… everyone remembers this race - it was a crazy day! No one minded the rain while packing up after such a thrilling afternoon.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR THREE F1 TRAVEL ESSENTIALS?
iPad, speakers and my team of chefs.
BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
Getting to travel and explore all the markets and different cuisines around the world.
FAVOURITE McLAREN DRIVER – PAST OR PRESENT?
I would say Jenson because he has a varied diet!
WHEN NOT AT WORK, I LIKE TO…
Eat out at different restaurants around the world.
INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF…
I’m always happy and jolly in the kitchen :) (well I thinks so!)
WHAT FUELS YOU THROUGH YOUR DAY (FOOD/MOTIVATION)?
I taste everything (perks of the job) and hopefully pleasing everybody.
YOUR FAVOURITE LUBRICATION (DRINK!)?
Coffee and a wee Johnnie Walker at night.
IF I WASN’T WORKING IN FORMULA 1, I WOULD BE…
In a restaurant/hotel not seeing the light of day…
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
A porter in a hotel.
