As the elder statesman, Tyler or ‘TJ’ as he was known to the mechanics, was a giant of a man: a historic founding father of the team.
With his sad passing at the end of last year, there were many glowing tributes to TJ. He was an endless source of knowledge with unrivalled experience. But he was also from a simpler age, when a hammer and adjustable spanner solved problems. When there was a engineering argument about whether to switch a driver on to rain tyres, TJ peered over his glasses and snorted: “Why don’t you guys chuck a piece of string out the front of the garage, drag it back in and if it’s wet you need wet tyres…”
