This week, the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team will be heading to Shanghai for the eleventh and twelfth race of Season 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Sam Bird will be making his competitive return since incurring an injury during the Monaco E-Prix, on 27 April 2024. Following a successful surgery to his left hand, roughly three weeks ago, he has been making a swift recovery. As a result, Sam will be returning to the grid in Shanghai.

Sam

“I’m very excited about getting out to Shanghai. Since injuring my hand in Monaco, I haven’t been able to compete in the last three races, so I’m looking forward to getting back in the #8 car for NEOM McLaren. My hand is feeling strong and I’m ready. Let’s go!”

Jake

“I’m really looking forward to going back to China. I’ve raced there before and won three times, so it’s been good for me in the past. It’s great that Formula E is returning to China, so I hope we can put on a good show.

“From the team’s side, we’ve improved elements of our performance, such as energy management over the last few races, but have struggled to cross the line with points, so that’ll be a key focus. I have a lot of confidence in the team, and hope that when we cross the chequered flag we’ll be where we need to be.”

Ian James

“In a couple of days’ time, the team will be hitting the track in Shanghai, marking the return of Formula E in China. It’s great to be able to return to China for the first time since 2019.

“We’re also very pleased to have Sam back in the car for the Shanghai E-Prix. Sam has shown an impressive dedication to his recovery and, after a successful operation, he has been able to complete his normal simulator sessions in the buildup to the event. I am sure his direct input and experience will be essential as we tackle a new challenge out in China.

“After a mid-season dip in terms of results, we’re ready to get back in contention. With a more traditional track surface, the Shanghai circuit should provide us the opportunity to get back into the key points-paying positions.”

Berlin

Last time out

During Sam’s absence, Taylor Barnard filled in for the absent Englishman, driving the remainder of the Monaco E-Prix sessions, as well as driving the #8 car for the team during the Berlin E-Prix. The team’s Reserve and Development Driver managed to finish in the points during both races in Berlin, with a best result of P8 after an impressive drive – becoming the youngest-ever driver to compete in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, as well as becoming the youngest-ever points-scorer in the World Championship.
