That was the weekend that was

The Portuguese Grand Prix according to social media

Moments before the start of the Portuguese Grand Prix, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown was asked what he thought McLaren could achieve in the race. He confidently predicted: “Definitely both cars can go forward. I’d like to think Daniel can get into the points and I think Lando has got a top five in him, so let’s see how it plays out.”

And that’s exactly what happened: Lando came home fifth, having started seventh, and Daniel made up seven places to finish in a points-paying position. Whether Zak could have predicted Arrow McLaren SP’s INDYCAR win several hours later, we’re not so sure. But while we ask him to peer into his crystal ball so we can get this week’s winning lottery numbers, here’s the best of social media from an exciting weekend in Portimão and across the pond…

Friday free practice went mostly to plan despite a couple of issues interrupting Lando’s running, although we did have an unexpected visit from a McLaren Plus member during FP1.

On the 27th anniversary of his untimely passing, we took the time to remember the inimitable Ayrton Senna on Saturday.

@HUARIU painted a jaw-dropping tribute to the great man and Lewis Hamilton: ‘Even Legends Have Heroes’.

Elsewhere, one young McLaren fan actually got to meet his hero…

Daniel was understandably disappointed to qualify P16. The reason for not making it out of Q1? Quite possibly this:

Either that, or it was because he was flying the TV helicopter.

After qualifying, Lando and Carlos were reunited in the press pen…

Aww…

I’m not crying, you’re crying…

However, this did raise suspicions over the accuracy of Formula 1: Drive to Survive.

Before the race, Lando really did ‘send it’…

Cue widespread speculation as to what was written on the piece of paper…

Even Red Bull got in on the act:

Having fought back from P16 to P9, gaining more positions than any other driver in the Portuguese Grand Prix, race engineer Tom Stallard was full of praise for Daniel when he crossed the finish line.

But we’re with @JCee8889 on this though:

The racing didn’t stop there! Several hours later, this happened in the INDYCAR race at Texas Motor Speedway…

It was difficult for many fans to put into words how they felt, but @MisterPigz nailed it with one of our favourite Zak GIFs:

Speaking of Zak, he made a bet with Pato at the beginning of this season:

And, just like an elephant, the internet never forgets…

Yes @ItsRushe, yes we are...

Meanwhile, back at the McLaren Technology Centre…
