2014 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix

It’s difficult to believe the Singapore Grand Prix only became a fixture of Formula One in 2008. The first night race through the heart of the great metropolis was a candidate for instant classic status, wowing audiences with a spectacle that seemed to both fit in with the best traditions of the F1 while also presenting it as something entirely new. It was exciting, and dangerous, technically demanding and very, very exciting. The intervening years have not diminished that appeal.

Singapore ticks all the street-race boxes. It has unforgiving walls and no room for error, a slippery surface quite unlike that of a permanent circuit and the uneven asphalt that not only pushes car set-up to the extreme but also has the capacity to distract drivers trying to thread the eye of a needle.

And that’s not the only distraction. The circuit has more corners than any other, providing no respite in the brutal heat and humidity of the equatorial city-state. Over the course of a race that habitually runs to the two-hour maximum, it ensures the Singapore Grand Prix is the ultimate physical challenge for drivers.
