Cavendish rides to (more) glory with a little help from McLAREN
Huge congratulations to champion cyclist and big friend of McLaren Mark Cavendish, who last night won the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.
Mark, who this year was crowned World Road Race Champion and took the green jersey at the Tour de France riding the Specialized S-Works + McLaren Venge bike, was runaway winner of the award, getting nearly half the public vote.
This tops a brilliant year for Mark, who was also awarded an MBE last month for his services to cycling and named Sportsman of the Year by the British Sports Journalists’ Association.
In September he became the first Briton to win the World Championship for 46 years.
Speaking at the ceremony, he said winning the BBC award was incredible.
“I am absolutely speechless, some of my team-mates here will say that is a rare thing.
"I had a group of guys who rode in Copenhagen [at the World Championships] who brought the rainbow jersey back to Britain after nearly half a century and that is a massive thing. Even to be nominated in the top 10 is an incredible thing.
"That we can produce champions from such a small place is superb."
The Specialized bike Mark rides was developed in partnership with McLaren Applied Technologies and won on its first outing earlier this year at the Milano-San Remo race, ridden by Matt Goss.
