The best moments from the Spanish Grand Prix
Lando’s suit swap, Oscar’s radio realisation, and Alex's recovery drive: A fly on the wall look at this weekend's action on and off-track
Welcome to our regular post-race round-up, a final look at the action, where we’ll break down the best and the bonkers of F1 from across the weekend. From our favourite photos to the slickest fits we spotted, plus all the behind-the-scenes goodness you might have missed.
Oscar and Lando delivered another dominant performance as they became the first McLaren drivers to record a 1-2 in the Spanish Grand Prix in a quarter of a century, brushing off Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s best attempts to nick the victory with a bold three-stop strategy.
Here, we’ll go over some of the best bits from the weekend, as Oscar looked back on 2024, Lando added a new race suit to his collection, and McLaren Development Driver Alex Dunne enjoyed another strong weekend in Formula 2, reclaiming top spot in the Drivers’ Championship.

Capturing the moment
In photography, like in Formula 1, timing is everything, and it was spot on in both counts here. We love our fans, and this is such a beautiful, creative photo, taken at one of the most picturesque locations around the circuit, with both MCL39s following one another.

Swapping suits
F1 loves a helmet swap, but what about a suit swap? Ahead of this weekend’s race, Lando met up with Fabio Quartararo, and the pair traded stories and race suits. The 2021 MotoGP World Champion, also known as El Diablo, is the second MotoGP rider Lando has met up with in the past three races, after he spent time with his hero, Valentino Rossi in Imola.

Outfit of the weekend
New Era, same outcome
In a world of few guarantees, Lando turning up to track in a 10/10 outfit is one. LN4 was repping a fit fresh from New Era’s latest drop, the washed black oversized T-shirt. He styled the top with some clean black jeans and a pair of crisp white trainers, complete with a McLaren speedmark necklace.

Alex has Dunne it again
It’s not uncommon in junior single-seater racing for a driver to step up and unexpectedly take a series by storm. Alex Dunne is having one of those seasons. After a learning year in Formula 3 last year, where he finished 14th but showed flashes of his doubtless potential with two podiums, the Irishman has effortlessly stepped up to Formula 2 and leads the Championship by four points.
The 2022 British Formula 4 champion has looked at home in Rodin Motorsport’s F2 machinery, taking two impressive victories, but was left with a lot to do on Saturday, starting the Sprint race from 19th. He had vaulted up to 14th by the end of a strong first lap, before capitalising on a late Safety Car, when he pitted for Soft tyres and began a charge through the field to second, notching his fourth podium in total. It was another hugely impressive drive from a racer in top form.

Quote of the weekend
Oscar makes it eight
“When you said that pace last year was going to be f****** awesome, you weren't wrong. I should listen to you more often, you know your stuff, Tom. Great weekend. Couldn't have asked for more, so thank you very much, everybody."
Oscar was flawless in Spain, chalking up his fifth win of the season, converted via his fourth Pole of the year.
As he thanked the team on his victory lap, Oscar took the opportunity to reflect on a conversation he had with his Race Engineer, Tom Stallard, in Spain 12 months ago. Having qualified a disappointing 10th in the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, Tom told Oscar “Don’t panic about that. We’re starting P10. We’ve got a quick car and we can gain back.”

Oscar didn’t panic then, nor did he panic in this year’s race when Max Verstappen briefly usurped him after the first round of pit stops. Oscar, knowing he had a quick car beneath him, focused on his own race and retook the lead when the Red Bull driver took a second stop.
From there, his victory never looked in doubt, crossing the line in first to net his eighth consecutive podium for McLaren, a feat only matched by Ayrton Senna in 1988 and Lewis Hamilton in 2007.
Referencing his conversation with Tom in 2024 on his way to the podium this weekend, Oscar joked that he should listen to his Race Engineer more often. Based off their results so far this season, we'd suggest they both 'know their stuff'.

Moment of the weekend
Papaya at the front
Not for the first time this year, we achieved a feat that had not been accomplished in more than two decades. The last time we secured a front-row lockout in the Spanish Grand Prix, Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard were driving for the team, in 1998.
Between them, Oscar and Lando set the pace throughout Qualifying, topping Q1 and Q2 before going head-to-head for Pole. Max Verstappen and George Russell made the second row, but neither of them could get close to Oscar or Lando. After Lando initially set the pace in Q3, Oscar managed to edge out his teammate by a marginal 0.017s.
The duo's hard work in Qualifying laid the groundwork for a 1-2 on Sunday, our first in this race since 2000 - the year after Lando was born and a year before Oscar. Based off recent results, we should imagine we'll break a few more of these records before the season is up.

What’s next?
After a busy triple header in Europe, the team are making the short trip home to Woking, where they'll debrief and dive into the data. We then head out to Canada for a standalone race, where we'll look to carry over our good form.
