Monaco Grand Prix
By Darren Heath
The stunning streets of Monaco became an epic backdrop for Darren Heath’s collection of grand prix photography.
Hear from the celebrated photographer on how he captured the MCL33’s Papaya Spark and Cerulean Blue on the Côte d'Azur.
"The later start time of every on-track Monaco F1 session resulted in Thursday’s FP3 running in gorgeous light that made for dramatic highlights and shadows. It’s difficult to release the shutter at exactly the opportune moment to capture such dramatic flare as not every car does it and those that do vary in position. Fortunately for me the MCL33 placed perfectly!"

"Shooting from on-high at Monaco is something every photographer strives for as dramatic angles are revealed. This study of Stoffel at speed between Tabac and the Swimming Pool is helped by the grandstand seats providing a perfect mirror of the gorgeous blue wings at either end of his MCL33. There’s even a streak of orange too!"
Camera: Canon EOS-1D X, Lens, 135mm, 1/13 sec @ f/32, ISO 50

"When taking pictures always be on the lookout for interesting visual opportunities that may work in camera. The new three tier Monaco pit buildings are fronted by large glass panels that immediately offered photographers with access something to work with. Not perhaps an obvious Monaco Grand Prix picture but one that with graphic shapes lines and shadows, works well."

"When the sun starts to drop shadows appear and at Monaco that’s a gift for the observant photographer. Positioning the car at the extreme top left of the frame accentuates the tight nature of the corner, adds drama to the picture and leaves the shadow to show in its full glory. Considering with maximum effort the composition of one’s photos is of paramount importance."

"For many years shooting at the Monaco race I’ve tried and failed to get a good picture featuring the swimming pool. This year, though, I nailed it! The cars appear in the frame very late so one has to anticipate the movement and start panning before the car can be seen. A Papaya orange McLaren at speed alongside a Caribbean Sea-like blue pool. Perfection!"

"So much of what the Monaco Grand Prix is about is the way in which the drivers have to attack the sinuous street track. Here Stoffel pops a wheel during just such a lap. It’s not very often that one uses a 600mm lens in the principality but there’s no better glass for getting in close and showing just what a tight little place it is."
Camera: Canon EOS-1D X, Lens, 600mm, 1/2500 sec @ f/10, ISO 500

"Seen from across the Monaco harbour, Fernando thrashes past the yachts as he takes the right of the swimming pool entry during the early stages of Sunday’s race. Slowing the shutter speed right down isolates the car while turning the yachts, grandstands and pit buildings in to a blur of shapes and colours. Don’t be afraid to experiment with long exposures. You’ll get a lot that don’t work but the ones that do..."

"By shooting at a 13th of a second and using the overpass that traverses the track just before Portiers along with the angular shapes of the Armco barriers to frame Stoffel’s MCL33, a dramatic shot results from an otherwise messy location. The reflected orange of the car’s gorgeous colour in the underside of the road bridge above is a pleasing bonus."
