Read time: 8.9 minutes
Investing in youth has always been part of McLaren’s ethos, with youngsters such as Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris embarking on highly successful Formula 1 careers via support from our team during their junior days.
Led by Alessandro Alunni Bravi, the McLaren Driver Development programme now exists to provide guidance, training, and opportunities to promising talents, acting as a springboard to career progression, while ensuring succession planning across McLaren Racing’s portfolio of front-running teams. In 2024, Gabriel Bortoleto won the Formula 2 Championship as a rookie while part of the McLaren Driver Development programme, and will this year make his full-time debut in Formula 1, starting his new journey with Sauber Motorsport.
Here’s who is part of our Driver Development family heading into the 2025 season.
Pato O’Ward
Age: 25 | Nationality: Mexican | 2025: NTT INDYCAR SERIES | Joined programme: January 2020
Fast hands, fast feet, fast everything. Pato has been part of the McLaren family since 2020, having immediately established himself as a front-runner in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, not to mention becoming a firm fan favourite.
Pato has won seven IndyCar races in McLaren colours, and last year finished fifth in the Championship, having taken the runner-up spot at the Indianapolis 500 for a second time.
The goal for 2025? More wins, contending for the title, and shooting for success at the Indianapolis 500.
Pato also remains a Test and Reserve Driver for McLaren in Formula 1, having completed several Driver Development test days and appearances in Free Practice 1 sessions, including a memorable outing on home soil in Mexico City last year.

Alex Dunne
Age: 19 | Nationality: Irish | 2025: Formula 2 | Joined programme: May 2024
Alex swiftly surged his way through the karting ranks and captured the OK Junior WSK Champions Cup in 2019, before moving into single seaters in 2021.
It proved to be a memorable first outing for Alex, as he claimed Pole position for his first ever race, in Spanish F4 at Spa-Francorchamps, and finished on the podium.
Alex went on to win the British F4 title in 2022, with an impressive tally of 11 victories, and finished runner-up in Italian F4 to now Mercedes F1 racer Kimi Antonelli.
After taking another runner-up spot in 2023, in the GB3 Championship, last year saw Alex join the Driver Development programme alongside a season in Formula 3, in which he twice mounted the podium.
In 2025, Alex switches full-time to Formula 2, with Rodin Motorsport, while also becoming NEOM McLaren’s Reserve and Development Driver in Formula E, a role which led to him participating in the Rookie Test in Jeddah in February.

Brando Badoer
Age: 18 | Nationality: Italian | 2025: Formula 3 | Joined programme: October 2024
Brando was born into a motorsport environment, with his father, Luca, having started 50 Formula 1 Grands Prix for Scuderia Italia, Minardi, Forti, and Ferrari.
Brando moved into single-seater competition in 2022, contesting Formula 4 seasons in Germany, Italy, and the UAE, and in 2023 scored six podiums and a Pole position, finishing sixth in the Italian Formula 4 Championship.
Brando progressed to the Formula Regional category in 2024, scoring three podiums in the Middle East Championship, before netting seven podiums and a Pole position on his way to fifth in the European Championship standings.
The Italian’s 2025 programme has already had a race-winning start, taking victory at Yas Marina and a further three podiums to finish fourth in Formula Regional Middle East, ahead of his move up to Formula 3 with PREMA.

Martinius Stenshorne
Age: 19 | Nationality: Norwegian | 2025: Formula 3 | Joined programme: May 2024
Martinius won multiple titles across his karting career and in 2022 made his debut in single seaters, competing across several Formula 4 categories in Italy, Germany, Spain, and the UAE.
It was a promising start, with a handful of podiums in Formula 4, and 2023 proved to be a breakthrough year for Martinius. He claimed five victories in the Formula Regional European Championship, finished second overall in the standings, and won the Rookies Championship.
Martinius became part of the Driver Development programme in 2024, having moved into Formula 3, winning on only his third start in Melbourne, before remounting the podium in Austria.
Martinius will tackle a second season in Formula 3 in 2025 with Hitech TGR.

Ugo Ugochukwu
Age: 17 | Nationality: American | 2025: Formula 3 | Joined programme: March 2021
Ugo turned heads in karting and after winning the FIA OK-Junior European Karting Championship in 2020, he joined the Driver Development programme.
Ugo stepped up to single-seater racing in 2022 and a year later contended for titles in Formula 4, finishing runner-up in the German championship, and taking the crown in Euro 4.
His journey took him to the Formula Regional European Championship in 2024, taking a win at Monza, but it was at the Macau Grand Prix where Ugo truly shone. Ugo controlled a difficult event, with wet weather and incidents interrupting sessions, but he kept his cool and won the Qualifying Race and Grand Prix from Pole position.
Like his 2025 teammate Brando, the 17-year-old continued racing over the winter by competing in the Formula Regional Middle East, where he finished third in the standings, winning once in Dubai and taking five podiums.
Ugo will graduate to Formula 3 in 2025 with PREMA Racing, joining Brando at the reigning Teams’ Champions.

Showjumper, skier, racing driver – there’s many strings to Ella’s bow.
Ella only began racing competitively in 2022, in Ginetta Junior Championship, and in 2023 finished runner-up in the Ginetta GT5 Challenge – Pro.
Single seaters beckoned in 2024, taking part in the Formula Winter Series, and the British Formula 4 Championship, in which she scored four podium finishes.
Ella also made a wildcard appearance in F1 Academy, in Singapore, taking ninth on debut before improving to seventh in the second race.
Ella joined the Driver Development programme and will contest a first full F1 Academy in 2025 with the team’s support, alongside a second campaign in British Formula 4, racing for Rodin Motorsport.
