McLAREN nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards

Our Formula 1 team are up for the World Team of the Year Award, with the ceremony set to take place in Spain

The McLaren Formula 1 Team has been nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Team of the Year award, which recognises the greatest and most inspirational sporting triumphs of the year.

We have been nominated alongside men’s Champions League winners Real Madrid CF, women’s Champions League winners FC Barcelona, men’s UEFA European Football Champions Spain, NBA Champions Boston Celtics, and the USA men's national basketball team, who won Olympic Gold.

The nomination follows an historic season for our F1 team, as we were crowned Constructors’ Champions for the first time in 26 years. Lando and Oscar won six Grands Prix and two Sprints between them, marking the first time since 2012 that we have won multiple races in a single season. They also took 21 podiums as we broke our points record, scoring 666.

The MCL38 was the quickest car on average over the course of the season, a remarkable achievement considering our team’s struggles at the start of 2023, when we began the season as one of the slowest teams on the grid.

Nominees are selected by the Laureus Nominations Panel, which is comprised of more than 1,000 members of sports media from more than 70 countries. The winners are voted for by the Laureus Academy, a distinguished group of sporting legends.

“2024 was a fantastic year for the entire team,” said CEO Zak Brown. "We achieved so much on and off track, with six Grand Prix wins, 21 podiums and two Sprint wins, leading us to achieve the 2024 Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship title.

“Our first team title since 1998 could not have been achieved without Lando, Oscar and the whole team in Woking working continually in the pursuit of getting us back to the front of the grid. It’s an honour to be nominated for such a prestigious award and to be recognised for the incredible work of all the men and women at the McLaren Formula 1 Team.”

Three Formula 1 teams have previously won the award – Renault in 2006, Brawn in 2010, and Mercedes in 2018 – all on the back of winning a Constructors’ Championship.

First held in 2000, the Laureus World Sports Awards are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. The awards ceremony will take place from 20-21 April in Madrid, Spain.
