McLaren unseen - meet our Sports Scientist
Name: David Harvey
Job: Performance Scientist
Time with McLaren: Six years
Job details: To fitness assess the drivers. To check they’re on the path to being as fit as they can be for their driving, to ensure they are as light as they can possibly be whilst also being as strong and as fit as possible.
Today I’m... writing a fitness report for Kevin Magnussen, a member of our Young Driver Programme.
Best moment of the day: Getting the results in from the different areas of the fitness team – and seeing that everyone from the physio and medical teams to the trainers and the drivers themselves have worked together to get reach peak condition. F1 is one of the most physically demanding sports for an athlete and you really get an idea of how the drivers have developed and see it all come together. It’s always very interesting, because then you know if they’ve achieved their goals.
Favourite motorsport moment: As a young F1 fan it was probably watching the likes of Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill winning for the British!
Favourite race: My favourite race would have to be when Jenson won the Canadian Grand Prix (2011). He came from last on the track through to overtaking Vettel on the final lap to win – and in the rain. That was pretty incredible.
