Whatever it takes

McLaren’s new era explained

When Bruce McLaren created our team 60 years ago, he forged it in his image. Those he recruited to join him on this journey fitted a specific description: talent was important, but hard work and determination more so. They needed to be dreamers, for whom racing was their whole life. They needed to be willing to do whatever it takes.

And that was why, when our founder was tragically killed during a test at Goodwood, we continued racing. It’s why we became one of the most decorated motor racing teams in history. That ethos has remained a theme throughout our history: we may not have explicitly said it, we may not have even realised it, but whatever it takes has been the driving force behind our every success, and the reason why we’ve gotten back up after every failure.

Whatever it takes isn’t a literal definition, it’s a racing mindset. We will do whatever it takes within the rules to experience that addictive winning feeling on merit, and to avoid the crushing, bitterness of defeat.

Throughout our history, our leaders and racing drivers have all had their own mantras in some form or another, Bruce’s was “The first essential is enthusiasm. Not just mild, but burning enthusiasm," and Senna’s was “You do something very well or not at all." Each of these ideologies shares the same basic principles: extreme sacrifice and total, unwavering commitment. It’s not always easy, but we help each other through it as a team.

In Andrea Stella's first internal company-wide debrief as McLaren Formula 1 Team Principal, he delivered his vision and shared his mantra: “Whatever it takes”.

For him, this embodied everything that he wanted his team to be, and everything it had been in the past. It’s a rallying cry to drive more endeavour, grit, and grind – to all deliver the additional five per cent that Andrea knew was within us.

No other sport is as obsessed with machinery and data as Formula 1, but it’s people who make the difference. Machines and data can’t go above and beyond, but people can.

Zak Brown and Andrea have done whatever it takes to provide the team with the raw materials they need to achieve success in Formula 1, drastically overhauling our machinery and facilities and reshaping and bolstering our Technical Team.

Lando and Oscar are doing whatever it takes to squeeze every last drop of performance from their cars, delivering more podiums and points in 2023 than any year since 2012.

Our people are doing whatever it takes to get the team back to the front of the grid, accomplishing what was arguably the greatest turnaround in Formula 1 history and breaking the world record for the fastest pit stop ever.

And, you, our fans, have done whatever it takes to follow and support us, getting up in the middle of the night and travelling across the world to watch our races. You’ve backed us through the toughest of times and you’ve stuck by our side, even when the odds were against us, and it felt like the world was too.

Whatever it Takes

Last year, and not for the first time, we were written off before we’d even turned a wheel in anger. But you knew us better than that – perhaps even better than we knew ourselves. You knew not to give up hope. Our people battled on through the noise and never let their heads drop, but it was you who believed in us, whose support dragged us through the nadirs and back onto the podium.

Whatever it takes is high performance but with heart and soul. It’s finding a level you didn’t even think possible, and pushing your teammates to even greater heights than they could have imagined. It’s about taking responsibility and accountability and working collectively to achieve our ultimate ambitions. If every single person at McLaren can do that, results will follow, and who knows where that could take us.

Bruce McLaren started it, Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Mika Häkkinen, and Lewis Hamilton continued it, and now it’s our turn. This is a new era for McLaren and we’re only just getting started.

Whatever it Takes.
