MP4-X: You’ve spoken!
Last week, we unveiled the McLaren MP4-X – our conceptual take on the future of single-seater racers.
We weren’t conclusively claiming it represented the way forward, but that it offered an exciting and revealing glimpse at what sorts of technologies could be employed in motorsport in both the near and distant future.
The response was phenomenal – #McLarenMP4X began filling social media news feeds across the world, with both its sleek looks and tantalising array of tech really firing your imagination.
In addition, we asked for your thoughts on whether you shared our vision.
Introducing closed cockpits to Formula 1 has always been something of a thorny subject, and it seems you’re still largely divided on the idea: 53 per cent of you felt a canopy was the way forward, with 47 per cent preferring the purity on an open-cockpit formula.
Real-time tyre monitoring
One of the key concepts of MP4-X, and one that’s far closer to reality than you might imagine, is the real-time monitoring of tyre behavior and performance. We asked if you agreed with this innovation, and 57 per cent of you were in favour, with 43 per cent still liking the uncertainty of unpredictable tyrewear.
Our final vote was about the introduction of a cockpit HUD display. Again, you were largely in favour of the innovation, with 55 per cent of you voicing your approval, and only 45 per cent feeling it would be an unncecessary distraction for the driver.
Of course, our vote wasn’t conclusive, but it definitely shows that you share our enthusiasm for seeing Formula 1 change and grow in the future. Perhaps we’ll see the MP4-X on the futuristic racetracks of the world sooner than we initially imagined…
