The science of sport
The McLaren Technology Group has progressed far beyond its origins in motorsport. It now involves itself in dozens of technology sectors ranging from medical research to space engineering – but competition is still deep in the DNA – which is why our partnership with UK Sport is one of McLaren Applied Technologies’ most satisfying projects. From materials engineering to data acquisition, the Applied Technologies team is contributing across a range of sporting disciplines.
It’s not just the traditional sports. When Lizzy Yarnold won the Women’s Skeleton at the 2014 Winter in Sochi, she did so thanks to a sled designed by McLaren Applied Technologies using sensor design, telemetry, computer simulation, wind tunnel validation and materials technology. This McLaren method of data-driven design created a sled which enabled Yarnold to take victory in Sochi by a cumulative 0.97 seconds.
