61-70: Europe 2010-Brazil 2010
61-70: Fast facts
Wins 1 (Belgium)
Fastest laps 2 (Belgium, Brazil)
Laps led 44
Belgian Grand Prix (44 laps), Spa-Francorchamps – August 29 2010
After a summer of Red Bull dominance, Lewis lines up second, but immediately takes the lead when pole-sitter Mark Webber struggles away from the line. Lewis is never headed, but it’s not an easy win: rain on lap 34 makes conditions treacherous and he has an off at Rivage, running perilously close to the tyre wall. A late Safety Car closes up the field but Lewis has everyone covered and he wins by 1.5s from Webber.
Lewis looks back
“It really means a lot to me to have won at Spa – it’s one of the great F1 circuits, a real monster, and I’m proud to have taken victory there. This win came during a difficult period for the team, but I remember getting on-track on Friday and immediately being convinced that we were in the hunt for the win.
“And that’s how it turned out: the car was amazing to drive – and, at a place like Spa, that’s really important. I only made one mistake, as the rain started to fall more heavily, I outbraked myself on the entry to Rivage – in those situations, you have to be really gentle with the car: I had to try and coax it to stay on the track, but it just ran wider and wider. My heart was in my mouth, particularly when I got on the gravel, realised there was no grip and slid closer and closer to the barrier. Luckily, I saved it – I wouldn’t have liked to walk back to the pits after binning it while in the lead!”
