Jenson Button steals the limelight by winning the world championship, but Lewis puts in a steely drive from the back of the grid. He starts third after struggling with a lack of downforce during a rain-affected qualifying session, but a Safety Car at the end of lap one prompts an inspired strategy choice. He pits for fuel and tyres, dropping to 15th, and then charges through the field. He passes Rubens Barrichello for third place with just 10 laps to go. It’s a brilliant back-to-the-front performance.
Lewis looks back
“This probably isn’t an obvious choice for one of my best result but, for me, it was a fantastic race – we thought we could challenge for victory but a poor qualifying in the rain put paid to that. Still, the team got the strategy spot-on, stopping me early and just letting me get on with the race: I just put my head down and didn’t stop charging until I’d crossed the line.
“I may have ‘only’ finished third, but that result felt as good as a win for me. I couldn’t have gone any faster that day.”
