Santander British Grand Prix (60 laps), Silverstone – July 6 2008
Summary: A masterful wet weather performance from Lewis. He qualifies fourth, but dominates the race after snatching the lead from team-mate Heikki Kovalainen into Stowe on lap four. As conditions worsen, he stretches his lead and laps everyone up to third place. He’s more than a minute clear of everyone by the end of the race.
Lewis looks back
“One of my best-ever races – and a race I’m still really proud to have won. For any British driver, Silverstone is a special place because you grow up watching races there and you race there in the junior categories so it feels like home. It’s a track with some awesome history, too – the first F1 race was held there in 1950 and all the greatest drivers have won there too – so it’s one of the most important tracks on the calendar.
“For me, this was also an extremely important victory – I’d had a difficult couple of races and it [the championship battle] was beginning to go away from me. In those circumstances, you always want a good result to prove the critics wrong – and everything just came together on the Sunday afternoon. I remember the team coming over the radio and telling me to slow down and take it easy, and I can remember wondering what they meant because I was pretty much just cruising round. It was only when I took the chequer that the size of the achievement started to sink in.
“I can still look at pictures of me celebrating on the podium in the wet and get goosebumps. So many happy memories”
