Straight-line speed. Typically, the end-of-straight speeds of the wider 2017-spec cars have been 15km/h (10mph) slower than in 2016, so expect to see the teams trimming out their cars in pursuit of more speed. But it’s important to retain a good balance because braking stability is crucial in the heavy braking zones.
How to tell when a driver's really on it
Watch him through the Ascari chicane (Turns eight, nine and 10), where a lot of lap time can be won and lost. It’s a high-speed left-right-left flick and a driver who’s on it will hit all three apices and get on the power early at the exit of Turn 10.
Trickiest bits for the driver
With the cars in low-downforce trim, they are skittish to drive and it’s easy to make a mistake. All of the kerbs need to be attacked around the lap, but not too much because they de-stabilise the car. Also, the two Lesmos are tricky: Lesmo Two is fast – 250km/h/155mph – and it tends to generate understeer, so it’s easy to run wide at the exit.
Low downforce. Monza and the Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan are the two lowest downforce tracks of the year.
Low. The asphalt is relatively old and grippy, but the cars are in low downforce trim and that reduces overall grip levels.
Red Supersoft, yellow Soft and white Medium compounds – the sixth time this combination has been used in 2017.
High. There are only six braking events around the lap, but all are from high speed and generate high brake temperatures.
Tips if you're a gamer
Braking for Turn One is difficult to get right on a qualifying lap. You arrive at the corner relatively slowly on your out-lap and the next time through you’re approaching it at 370km/h/205mph. It’s also important not to get too greedy over the kerbs. The temptation is to straight-line the chicanes, but you can’t get back on the power while the car is unsettled.
