High-speed stability is crucial. Some of the corners at the Hungaroring are deceptively fast, particularly in Sector Two, and some of them are long very long. To be quick, a driver needs a compliant car that remains well-balanced from corner entry to exit.
How to tell when a driver's really on it
A telltale sign is the amount of kerb a driver uses at the exit of Turn Four. It’s a flat-out left-hander, after which the car needs to be brought over to the left in preparation for the following right-hander. When a driver’s really on it, he uses the exit kerb at Turn Four and then violently turns the car to the left in preparation for Turn Five.
Trickiest bits for the driver
Last year’s re-surfacing work made the track much smoother, but there’s still a mid-corner bump at Turn Five. If a car’s suspension is too hard, this bump upsets the car and can cost a lot of time.
Maximum downforce. Aside from the start-finish straight, which is 908m (0.564 miles) in length, the Hungaroring is a tortuously twisting racetrack. There are five 180-degree corners and only two corners with apex speeds in excess of 200km/h (124mph). As a result, a car needs every bit of downforce available to it.
Medium. The new asphalt, laid prior to last year’s race, provides good baseline grip, but there’s still quite a high rate of evolution over the weekend. The track is used infrequently during the year and it gets faster as it cleans up and more rubber is laid down.
Red Supersoft, yellow Soft and white Medium – the fifth time this combination has been used in 2017.
Low. Turn One is a heavy braking point, but only 14 per cent of the lap is spent on the brakes.
Tips if you're a gamer
The trickiest section of track is the left-right combination, Turns Four and Five. You carry lots of speed through Turn Four, which is taken in sixth gear, but it’s risky to use all of the exit kerb because you need to get the car immediately back to the left-hand-side of the track for Turn Five, which is a long, late-apex right-hander. To be fast, you need a compliant car that has a neutral balance. If you achieve that, you’ll also be fast through the five 180-degree corners on the lap and will more than likely set a competitive lap time.
