How data science is driving Singapore’s technological innovation

From simple pleasures to being at the heart of Singapore’s technological innovation. 

Analytics Manager Pavandip Singh shares how both he and Singapore have grown, why he joined McLaren Applied Technologies, and how his work in data science is positively changing the face of healthcare and public transport in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

Q: What have you enjoyed about living in Singapore?

I’ve always considered being born and growing up in Singapore as a privilege. I grew up amongst friends from multiple cultures.

We would spend most of our time running around and kicking a football, or playing capteh – keeping a feathered shuttlecock in the air for as long as possible without using hands – in any open space we could find.

Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali were special days when we enjoyed feasting on a wide array of delicious home-cooked food in our friends’ and neighbours’ houses.

We grew closer through playing together, attending school together, and later serving together during our National Service. As we grew, so did Singapore.

To this day, I still consider it a privilege to live in Singapore, albeit in a Singapore that is far more advanced and sophisticated than when I was a child. It is now a hotbed for technological innovation and a global financial capital.

Q: Why did you choose to join McLaren Applied Technologies?

I’ve always searched for useful data to make informed decisions which bring about meaningful change. Along my career path, my passion for data-driven insight has seen me work in start-ups, research institutes, the pharmaceutical industry and even as a defence scientist.

When I discovered McLaren Applied Technologies was building upon its successful racing heritage by applying its cutting edge-technology and F1-derived expertise to Singapore’s healthcare and public transport, my choice was obvious!

Q: McLaren Applied Technologies is based in Singapore to solve problems in health and public transport for Singapore and the wider APAC. How does that make you feel as a Singaporean?

McLaren Applied Technologies’ presence in Singapore, coupled with its aim to contribute to two major areas of importance to the nation and the wider APAC, healthcare and public transport, played a major role in my decision to join the team.

Having been born and raised here, it naturally made me happy to know that the work I do benefits Singapore as well. It’s an honour for me to be involved in these initiatives, as part of a world-class team, working to deliver state-of-the-art solutions.

Q: What is the role of data analytics in the projects that McLaren Applied Technologies is working on in Singapore?

Data analytics plays a crucial role in extracting meaningful insight for projects we undertake and provides a foundation of well-informed decision making for the products we build.

Industry leaders understand the importance of data-driven decision making within their organisations. This is particularly prevalent in Singapore where Smart Nation initiatives are being realised, such as healthcare optimisation and intelligent transport and manufacturing.

McLaren Applied Technologies is ideally suited to this environment thanks to the expertise it has gained over decades in Formula 1 as the leader in sensor technology and telemetry.

We use a combination of first principles and state-of-the-art data-driven techniques to identify optimal solutions in a variety of areas including biotelemetry, wellness and clinical applications, manufacturing yield, process optimisation, and vehicle telemetry for anomaly detection, prediction and prevention.

The translation and delivery of meaningful analytical insight is only made possible through close collaboration with our software team to adopt best practices that produce high quality end-to-end solutions. 

Q: How do you work with our London Analytics and Software team?

The Analytics and Software teams in Singapore and London work as a single unit. We have infrastructure that enables daily collaborative meetings, from tele and video conferences to collaborative whiteboarding sessions.

There are also placements in the UK for Singapore team members and vice-versa based on project requirements. While many activities are done collaboratively, we capitalise upon the opportunity of having teams in two time zones to keep productivity consistently high throughout the 24-hour cycle.
