As the sun sets over the glistening McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) this spring evening, the last few desk drawers in the Software, Modelling and Decision Science team are being emptied into boxes ready to be transported to London. While the MTC in Woking remains McLaren Applied's headquarters, half of the Software, Modelling and Decision Science team are moving into the company’s new and unique office in the Southbank area of London.
The new building boasts spacious offices and meeting rooms, a gaming lounge and stunning views of London. It also hosts weekly events, classes, workshops and happy hours, encouraging the best and brightest to network and discuss the next big idea to hit the tech industry over a drink or two.
So why have we opened a new London office?
Firstly, space. We need lots of it. We’re expecting to welcome an additional one hundred software engineers, designers and strategists on board before the end of 2017, and it’s likely that we will move into an even bigger building in London, towards the end of the year. Many of the roles for the London base are live on our careers website now.
Secondly, as we look to collaborate with even more like-minded businesses to help solve crucial challenges in health and transport, being at the heart of the UK’s technology hub is a necessity.
The new London office also marks a shift in culture for McLaren Applied.
Our people work in smaller, self-organised and agile teams, designed to help them solve whichever challenges come their way, quicker and smarter. And although our Data Scientists, C#, Scala, Java, Front End, Mobile and Simulation development teams are divided by their expertise, they work collaboratively on projects to ensure McLaren is armed with end-to-end capabilities to deliver world-class solutions solve our customers’ challenging problems.
We leave big decisions to our engineers, that’s why we hired them. We encourage autonomous thinking whilst engendering a spirit and culture of teamwork. Our engineers are responsible for the design, commit, deploy, maintenance and operations of our projects guided by the governance of our delivery framework. Our people have the freedom to architect solutions as part of self-organising teams, and work with whichever language, tools and frameworks are most appropriate for the task at hand to deliver elegant and simple solutions.
Our ambition is that we continue to foster the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship within McLaren Applied.
