McLaren Automotive is a British manufacturer of luxury, high-performance sports cars - developing and utilising technology and learnings taken from five decades of race-winning success to set new benchmarks in terms of performance and efficiency.
Having previously developed iconic cars including the McLaren F1, McLaren Automotive was established as an independent global car company in 2010, launching the groundbreaking 12C and 12C Spider in 2011 and 2012 respectively. This was followed in 2013 with the limited-run McLaren P1™and, in keeping with the plan to introduce a new model or derivative each year, unveiled the 650S Coupe and 650S Spider in March 2014.
The experience gained through Formula 1 and previous road car projects has been invaluable. McLaren has more than 30 years of experience working with, and developing, carbon fibre and since 1981 has never built a car without a carbon chassis. The team was the first to introduce the material to Formula 1 with the MP4/1, and introduced the technology into road cars with the McLaren F1 as the first carbon fibre-bodied road car in the 1990s. Today’s entire McLaren range is engineered around a revolutionary carbon fibre chassis which offers the perfect blend of light weight and inherent strength.
As well as launching an entirely new range of cars, McLaren Automotive has established a global network of over 50 dealerships in key automotive markets, built the world class McLaren Production Centre and, working closely with technical partners including Akebono, AkzoNobel, ExxonMobil, Pirelli, SAP and TAG Heuer, continues to invest in R&D to develop the future range of groundbreaking cars and improve production techniques.
McLaren Automotive employs over 1,000 highly skilled employees and has made a significant contribution to the local and national economy. 90 per cent of cars built are exported overseas, and the company supports a network of suppliers, many of which are highly innovative SMEs.
