McLaren Young Drivers in action: Hungaroring
Sunday: Race 2
Podium finish for both McLaren Young Drivers after a close-fought race in Hungary.
Kevin Magnussen made it a second successive P2 finish at the Hungaroring in today’s Formula Renault 3.5 Race 2, following a close-fought battle with rookie Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne, who came home in third.
Qualifying on pole position [Kevin] and P3 [Stoffel], it was the McLaren Young Drivers who set the early race pace. However, after the first round of pitstops it was eventual race winner Antonio Felix da Costa who nipped out in front to take the lead, a position which he held until the race end.
At the chequered flag Kevin and Stoffel were split by just 0.7 seconds to come home in P2 and P3 respectively. Kevin [first] and Stoffel [second] remain out in front in the Formula Renault 3.5 championship standings.
Saturday: Race 1
A fast and faultless display from McLaren's Young Drivers in a rain-soaked day at the Hungaroring.
McLaren Young Drivers Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne produced an excellent display in the wet to finish 2nd and 4th respectively in today's opening Formula Renault 3.5 Championship Race at the Hungaroring.
In a chaotic and soaking-wet qualifying session, which was abandoned after just 26 minutes with cars spinning off the track and red flags aplenty, Stoffel (P11) and Kevin (P16) struggled to get in a clear lap.
In the afternoon's race, starting behind the safety car, Kevin and Stoffel immediately set to work in weaving their way through the field in a fast and faultless manner. Kevin climbed an impressive 10 places in the opening four laps to move up to P6, going on to improve further still to come home in second place, shortly followed by Stoffel in P4.
That meant more vital points in their battle to secure the Formula Renault 3.5 Drivers' Championship. Both McLaren Young Drivers remain first [Kevin] and second [Stoffel] in the Drivers Championship going into tomorrow's Race 2.
