McLaren's Young Drivers complete a dominant Formula Renault 3.5 season with a 1-2 finish in Barcelona
Formula Renault 3.5 championship winner Kevin Magnussen made it two wins from two in the final weekend of the season with a victory in race 2 in Barcelona. Kevin withstood pressure from fellow McLaren Young Driver Stoffel Vandoorne, whose excellent second place finish means that the Belgian rookie ends the season second in the championship.
It was an 8th pole position of the season for Magnussen, equalling Daniel Ricciardo's record set in 2010, with Stoffel starting beside him on the front row of the grid.
Kevin turned that pole into a lead in the first few laps, fending of pressure from Stoffel who re-took second place after passing Pic at turn 1. After a brief shuffling of the order in the mandatory pitstops, Kevin opened up a comfortable lead, with Stoffel holding off the advances of Will Stevens to secure his second podium finish of the weekend.
In today’s Formula Renault 2.0 action McLaren Young Driver Nyck de Vries added to Saturday’s victory with a very good second place finish in Barcelona.
Congratulations to all McLaren Young Drivers for an excellent 2013 season.

Magnussen wins in Barcelona to claim the Formula Renault 3.5 championship
McLaren Young Driver Kevin Magnussen produced an impressive lights-to-flag victory in the penultimate race of the season to claim the Formula Renault 3.5 championship.
Fellow McLaren Young Driver Stoffel Vandoorne, Kevin’s sole remaining challenger for the title, claimed another place on the podium with the Belgian rookie coming home in third.
21-year-old Kevin was in dominant form in Saturday qualifying, grabbing pole position to give him the best possible chance of the sixth place or higher finish that would have sealed the title. Kevin converted pole position into a comfortable lead, holding off the challenges of Britton Will Stevens to take the chequered flag.
An equally good start from 21-year-old Stoffel Vandoorne springboarded him from fourth into third place, a position he held until the race-end, finishing amongst just twelve cars following a multi-car collision at turn 2 of the opening lap.
Kevin and Stoffel will be in action again on Sunday for the season’s Formula Renault 3.5 finale in race 2 at Barcelona.
There were more celebrations for McLaren's Young Drivers in the day's Formula Renault 2.0 action, with Nyck de Vries coming home in style to take the victory.
