Race engineers and drivers monitor telemetry data to realise optimum performance of drivers and cars on track.
Telemetry data is read from left to right across the page.
Through telemetry data, you’re studying key instrument traces (throttle/brake/steering etc) to build up a complete picture of how the car, and driver, behaves across the course of a lap.
The purple line (top) is the engine rpm (there are tiny rev fluctuations after each gearshift, that’s a little torsional vibration through the crank).
The red line (stepped) records gears – vertical lines indicate a shift of gear.
The light blue line in telemetry data shows steering trace – up is left and down is right.
The black line reflects car speed.
The red line (linear) reflects use of throttle – the uppermost flat-line is full throttle.
And finally the purple line (bottom) shows braking.
