Lewis is Sebastian Vettel’s closest challenger in qualifying and the race. He lines up second on the grid, alongside the Red Bull driver, and takes full advantage when Vettel retires after puncturing at Turn Two. Lewis is 2.5s clear of the field by the end of the opening lap and dominates the remainder of the race, taking his third victory of the season.
Lewis looks back
“It meant a lot to win this one. I’d had a difficult few races, I hadn’t won since mid-summer [in Germany] and it was incredibly satisfying to be back on the top of the podium. I’m particularly proud of the way I managed the race: people think it’s easy to win from the front, but there are always lots of things going through your mind. You’re controlling everything – the car, the tyres, the pace, so it’s never as straightforward as it looks.
“It served as a good reminder that winning grands prix never gets boring – winning is good for the soul!”
