2012 Mid-Season Review
With three fantastic team victories, several first-time winners and a finely poised championship battle, the breakneck pace of the first 11 grands prix has left us little time to pause for breath. But with Formula 1 taking a well-earned summer break, now’s the perfect moment to pick our highlights from an utterly thrilling 2012 season.
Here’s our rapid-fire guide to the highest highs of our first half…
Best quali lap
[IMAGE7=LEFT]Lewis’s three pole positions are clear testament to his ability to nail a flying lap, but his pole in Hungary was particularly sweet: it proved absolutely critical in securing him victory and it was the team’s historic 150th pole to boot.
[IMAGE6=LEFT]Jenson’s getaway in Melbourne not only propelled him into the lead, it paved the way for one of the most commanding drives of the year so far. Come to think of it, his restart following a late-race Safety Car period was pretty nailed too. A perfect day’s work.
[IMAGE5=LEFT]Got to be Silverstone. The Santander British Grand Prix is always the busiest, most vibrant and fan-filled race of the season. This year was no exception, and everyone remained in high spirits despite the weather’s best efforts to rain down hard on them.
[IMAGE4=LEFT]There’s only one contender: the fastest pitstop in Formula 1 history. Jenson’s second stop at the Santander German Grand Prix was over in a scant 2.31s. Faster than you can read this sentence! Becoming the standard-setters in the pitlane has been tough – but, boy, has it been worth it! Watch Jenson Button’s World Record breaking pitstop.
[IMAGE3=LEFT]Hard to pick a single defining move. How about the flurry of passes performed by both Jenson and Lewis as they battled past Raikkonen, Webber and Vettel in the frantic final laps of the Chinese Grand Prix? A double-podium was a just reward.
[IMAGE2=LEFT]Lewis’s second stop for tyres in Montreal added a nail-biting sense of unpredictability to the Canadian Grand Prix. He’d just bet the house and it took a couple of ultra-tense laps before it finally became clear that the gamble would pay off! Brilliant stuff and a morale-raising victory.
